Abramovich is a corrosive influence on football
Matthew Syed upsets Sky and its gormless sycophants with a daring criticism of Abramovich and his dirty deeds.

Finally someone speaking up. Let's see how people defend him. The Quatar foundation and usmanov are no better either.

He is good for the club no doubt, but he raises good points on how it is a corrosive influence upon football as a whole.

Don't think it would have stopped the other rich owners though. Roman played his part, but if he hadn't come then someone else would have like we have seen recently.

Re: Abramovich is a corrosive influence on football
This guy doesn't really have any facts to back up some of his theories. Without RA actually coming out and saying anything nobody can really know the reasons he bought the club, but to say that it's purely for "protection" and then claim it as fact is completely unreasonable. Could that have been a contributing factor? Possibly but there isn't really any way to prove this.
The explanation of the oil business dealings is also apparently wrong it went something like:
All that said it's obviously not surprising that a shady Russian billionaire has done some shady deals/proceedings in the past to gain part of his wealth.
The explanation of the oil business dealings is also apparently wrong it went something like:
- In 1995, Abramovich and Boris Berezovsky, an associate of President Boris Yeltsin, acquired the controlling interest in the large oil company Sibneft. The deal was within the controversial loans-for-shares program and each partner paid US$100 million for half of the company, below the stake's stock market value of US$150 million at the time, and rapidly turned it up into billions. The fast-rising value of the company led many observers, in hindsight, to suggest that the real cost of the company should have been in the billions of dollars.

This.
Yes, RA did it first, but to think that if RA had staed out of football there would be no City, Anzi etc is just naive

Also could someone explain to me how owning Chelsea (or Spuds which was his first choice of course) would have protected RA if Putin had decided to go after him?

According to the journalist having a high profile that owning Chelsea gave him would make Putin afraid to go after him

Ok post your sources and facts to back it up? It can't be proven so it's just speculation claimed as fact by some journalist.

FACTS and evidence are only as good as people are willing to accept them. I accept what he says. I believe him.

I was asking a serious question, and tbh i buy your theory, nobody would kick up too much of a stink if some rich Russian oil baron got whacked, but the owner of a huge football club is a different story, that said i dont know if that holds true to the Quatari Group who on PSG, i wouldnt know the names or faces of any of them

So you've watched one video, done no actual research and just take some journalist who is sensationalizing a story with no sources, no proof as fact? That's up to you I guess.
I'm not defending the morally wrong things that Roman has done nor saying that everything Syed said was wrong but alot of it is just made up crap and the sheep are just lapping it up.
Also what suggests Putin wants RA gone?
Chris Hutchins, a biographer of Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin, describes the relationship between Russian president and Abramovich as like that between a father and a favorite son; Abramovich himself has stated that his relationship with Putin is a professional business relationship, as signified by his use of the Russian language's formal "Вы" (like Spanish "usted" or French "vous") in addressing Putin, as opposed to the informal "ты" (Spanish "tú" or French "tu").

Re: Abramovich is a corrosive influence on football
I have the opinion that rich oil oligarchs, wealthy families and people that benefit off crime should not have any involvement in football, the clubs should run themselves through self revenue from the fans and maybe sponsorship( without loopholes where billionares can still spend big ) . Football is about the fans and shouldn't be a game between billionares to see who can buy the most clubs, best players and turn the biggest profits. I may sound hypercritical because Juventus is financially backed by the Agnelli's but it's not like they give us 300 million a year to spend in the transfer market and we always buy the best players in the world. In an ideal world the billionares should get lost, go and spend time on their yachts, go to their cocktail parties and get the hell away from the sport before they ruin it for everyone else.
