Think about it, Giaccherini proved why he should be on the field. The 3-4-2-1 is actually a very solid formation that is incredibly hard to handle in the mid and in defense. When defending and with the ball it's a 3-6-1, when attacking it's a 3-4-3. I actually really like this formation from Prandelli and never have actually thought about it until now. Juventus have all the tools to play this formation, just replace Candreva, De Rossi, Balotelli, and Maggio with who is at Juventus now. Tevez runs a lot, and can easily step into an attacking mid position, while Giaccherini has the ability to be the tireless legs you need to be there as well. All the players substituted from the Italian national team seem like for like in my opinion.

Here is a picture of what I'm talking about.

----------------------------------Buffon
-------------------Barzagli-------Bonucci-------Chiellini

-----------------------------------Pirlo
Lichesteiner------------------------Vidal-------------------------Giaccherini

-------------------Marchisio---------------------Tevez
----------------------------------Llorente

The "new" era was started by Conte who first used the 3 man back for Juve that translated to the national team

if anything Napoli started it, and a 3-5-2 is a lot different than a 3-4-2-1 in player movement.

You can even interchange Vidal and Marchisio if you'd like.

I'm saying Italy started using it after Conte's Juve used it due to the high amount of Juve players in the team

He started using it because Bonucci and Barzagli are terrible in a 4-back

Udinese actually but no one really started it... it just sort of happened due to the resources available at Juventus. I mean, when Conte arrived there was all this talk about his "4-2-4", it never happened. Vidal, Pirlo and Marchisio were all best served as starters and not would fit. The solution became a 4-3-3. The next problem was that there was no adequate leftback, with Chiellini holding this position but he can't really do that is required in Conte's system (see Lichtsteiner's marauding runs). Then, boom 3-5-2.

This year it will probably be:

Tevez-Llorente
Asamoah*-Marchisio-Pirlo-Vidal-Lichtsteiner
Chiellini-Bonucci-Barzagli
Buffon

*Maybe Kolarov, when Giaccherini plays it is in the central midfield area predominantly.

Man that line up has me so excited.

And yeah we could argue all the way back to whoever invented the 3 man system but there's no use in doing so.

Conte deserves credit for putting the 3 man back line in and winning trophies with it.

Napoli deserve some credit after a surprise (To whose who didn't watch them regularly) deep CL run.

Udinese have been at it for a long time, and deserve some credit as does Prandelli himself, who seems to understand that the back 3 is his teams best bet at competing for the major titles.

It might not work for every team, since not every team has wingbacks. Also lot of top teams have wingers and might prefer to play with more midfielders and attackers.

Like Real Madrid wouldn't be able to play 4 attackers at the same time. Also Barca wouldn't be able to have a 3 man midfield with 3 forwards etc etc. Same with Chelsea with their attackers, Man City etc.

I don't care who started it, but with the midfield we are building I just hope it makes its way to Tottenham :coffee:

hmm Zeman first Used it for Roma Against Fiorentina , i think that's a good formation but requires a physically on Form team , Italy pressed hard and in extra Time they gave up and couldn't keep up .

Doesn't suit Juve, and Prandelli used it because Candreva isn't a striker, so he couldn't use him in a 3-5-2.

Why doesn't it suit Juve? Because Vidal would have to play more defensively, and that is also another reason why Prandelli used it, because De Rossi is better defensively, as a holding midfielder.

The formation used last night was just one that is a short-term solution, because Italy had no other options to be honest, since Prandelli, doesn't seem to like El Shaarawy, and Giovinco now, and couldn't keep Giack out.
