Beckenbauer already called it as it is a few months ago tbh.

So where did he "call" for his retirement aside from his criticism of one goal?
Or should we also forget how often anything in Deutsche is taken out of context including Becks' rephrasing

He didn't call for his retirement but he actually called him a "retiree". I don't need translations, I speak German. And he actually attributed BOTH goals as Buffon errors, not just the Alaba one.

Re: Buffon is past it
You have highlighted the wrong part. This is the important one:
Translation: "Buffon should have saved both the 1-0 and 2-0, where he lets the ball rebound", he told BILD newspaper.

Re: Buffon is past it
Most people are trolling but if you honestly believe that he should retire and his confed cup form is an indication to how he plays in the other 40odd games every year then you should consider stopping watching football all together.
Maybe flinging yourself over a cliff whilst you're at it.

And what does that have to do with calling him to retire or any other major criticism. Rentner isn't as nearly as offensive as it is within English. Beckenbauer had to play his comments down twice since Deutsche is usually if not always taken out of context.
Becks is the same who called him undisputed after Conte's first Scudetto.

Re: Buffon is past it
"Rentner" is quite offensive tbh. In Germany you go into "Rente" when you are 67 (or if you are disabled or something like that). He basically called Buffoon a 67 year old. Or a cripple.

Re: Buffon is past it
Not quite correct. The phrasing was "Das war Altherrenmanier von ihm" - meaning "this looked as if he was acting like an elderly man". There was nothing about retiree or so. I could try to dig out my post where I translated the full statement, if you like. ^^futbol wrote:He didn't call for his retirement but he actually called him a "retiree". @Arqui
Beckenbauer was originally talking at Sky as pundit, and I used the text from Sky. Looks like the Focus was paraphrasing the statement somewhat. And quotes from BILD can't really be taken serious in any case - they usually twist stuff in the way that elicits the biggest reaction.

Re: Buffon is past it
No matter what he said, the fact is he more or less retracted his statement. He had a small dig at Buffon for letting that 30second goal.
Replays showed the insane deflection that happened anyway, it skimmed off of Vidals boot and changed the spin on the ball. One of those things where you have to put your hands up and say "It happens"
Buffon's had a poor (By his Standards) few games. Big deal. What person doesn't have a small window of bad games?
Unless he continues this trend half-way into next season, this retirement talk is just purely to try and get a stupid reaction out of people.

Apologies as I hardly use Focus for Deutsch news as Speigel.de is my most frequent for news in Deutsch. My original point was to explain how out of context German can be taken out of, despite his seeming solid grasp on the language.
@Father: I don't even think he has been bad as half the goals have come from the stupidity of the backline calling offside while leaving Buffon in the mist. Others where his back-line haven't followed instructions. Yes, by his standards we expect a lot more, but not as bad as he it has been criticized for here.

Re: Buffon is past it
So. I actually found the full quote and my translation. Here you go:
Buffon's gaffes did not stay hidden from Franz Beckenbauer. The pundit complained at Sky about the performance of the 35-year old [keeper] in the break. That was around 120 metres - please don't be upset with me, but he should have saved that. That was old men's [football] by him. Normally he is an outstanding goalkeeper and I expect that he can play on for some more years, but something like this must not happen to him. 35 metres and the trajectory of the ball was only minimally changed by the deflection", the Kaiser judged.

Re: Buffon is past it
His positioning and command of area is as good as ever..! but i genuinely think his reflex and shot stopping level has been very sub par..must be due to age.
Re: Buffon is past it
I don't understand how you can say Messi and Ronaldo and other top talents around the world flop in the NT but you see Buffon have bad one game for Italy and want him to retire....
Buffon is still arguably Italy's best keeper. Only Sirigu comes close.

Re: Buffon is past it
Looks like I got some warning levels to knock down.
In all fairness though...Buffon parried Marcelo's shot right to Fred for that final Brazil goal....keepers with far less pedigree do that. Not really expected from a keeper of Gigi's caliber. He must take partial responsibility at least for that goal imo.
Let's be honest though....Brazil molested Italy's backline all night long....that was the real poor performance.

Funny cause Buffon did not play a single game in 2010 WC. Even if he did then that l
That says a lot about how good Buffon actually is if he couldn't get time in that 2010 squad m80.
