Martinez to Everton
Wigan have agreed compensation with Everton according to Dave Whelan.
Only a matter of time now, thoughts?

Re: Martinez to Everton
It'll be interesting to see if he can make his style of play work at Everton and whether he'll keep playing his 3-4-3.
Their squad isn't really set-up for a possession based game, but they do have the wing-backs to make the formation work in Baines and Coleman (assuming they hold on to Baines this summer), and their front three would have Pienaar and Mirallas in it, I'd imagine.
They may need a couple of central midfielders, though, since Osman and Barkley are the only ones who are technically good.
There's Fellaini to consider, also. Moyes used him as an attacking midfielder a lot of the time and I can't see Martinez doing the same, so I wonder if he'll be sold or if he'll play DM/CM on a consistent basis again.
If they add a decent striker and a couple of midfielders, I think they'll be able to push the top seven, provided Martinez can construct a good defence on top of everything else; the fact that Wigan's defending didn't improve at all under him was probably his biggest failure.

He will have to change the squad gradually if he wants to impose his style. I am interested to see how he does at Everton.

Re: Martinez to Everton
If I was him, I'd listen to these mega offers for Fellaini and I'd take that money to buy 3 or 4 players who would suit my style.
There is potential to improve, if won't be easy on a bad budget, which is why I suggest milking every penny he can for a player who he probably doesn't want with his style of play.

Everton insist Dave Whelan's claim that compensation has been agreed for Roberto Martinez is "regrettable and somewhat premature". #SSN
Whelan is such an attention seeking cock end.

Re: Martinez to Everton
I think Martinez is a better coach than Moyes, considering his clubs budget was half that of Everton and he consistently kept an inferior side up and actually won something.
Martinez performed miracles with a horrible squad year after year and played some of the most beautiful football I have ever seen with average talent.
Martinez is my favorite coach though, so my views are decidedly skewed.

Re: Martinez to Everton
Itll be cool to see what Everton are like with him in. I found them a dreadfully boring side under Moyes.
First thing I'd do is sell Fellaini and Baines. Could get about 40 million for both of them. While Im a fan of them, I think they could make the squad better by selling them. They are worth more to other teams than they are to Everton.
I think their first target should be Benteke

Hopefully he relegates another team, sell all the good players and just buy wigan players.Hopefully he relegates another team, sell all the good players and just buy wigan players.

I hope he'll struggle. And that he won't have much money to spend, Everton's squad is a bit of a ticking time-bomb.

I guess we'll find out how good he really is. But I don't see Everton playing his style at all!

Re: Martinez to Everton
I don't WANT Everton to struggle (too much) under Martinez, but I do think that the next season or two will be defined transition. They have a relatively thin and (in parts) aging squad that's ill-suited to his preferred style, and he'll have a very limited budget to use for restructuring. The fact that Moyes left the club on a free and they have to pay Wigan to get Martinez will hurt that thin budget even more. Selling Fellaini and Baines could/will generate some transfer funds but it will also destabilize the squad a bit with the two biggest names (value-wise) leaving, and the new signings make take time to settle.

Wouldn't the new tv deal boost Everton's budget?

Not by enough to make dramatic changes.

They don't really need to make dramatic changes to retain Europe spots in the table next season do they?

Re: Martinez to Everton
No but to fit Martinez' style they do. Could you see the like of Fellaini, Osman and Gibson playing possession football?

Not really. But couldn't they add/replace, say, 2-3 players in the squad with their current budget? Players of Martinez's choice?

Re: Martinez to Everton
Possibly. What I am saying is, what Everton so good was their style of play, Moyes made them a very hard team to beat. Martinez has a completely different style. For him to maintain Everton's position, he might need more than one or two players.

Re: Martinez to Everton
If I were Martinez, I would sell players:
1. Who can bring big bucks
2. Who are on big salary
3. Who will regress next season
That would give him the fund to bring young (but talented) players who will suit his style (not to mention trim the wage bill).
He would be given benefit of doubt for the first season so he should use that time to build a team suited to his style rather than wasting it to shove his style down the existing squad.
Is he any good in transfer market! Does Everton have any DS who handles the transfer issues!

Re: Martinez to Everton
I'm pretty sad realizing that there'll be only one team from Merseyside in PL from 2014-15 season

Re: Martinez to Everton
Everton generally bring in decent free agents. I don't know who is on a high wage but I think Baines, Fellaini and maybe Jelovic will be sold.

Did Steve Bruce do a much better job at Wigan with similar constraints. Not sure hose Maryinez did an amazing job at Wigan.Teams like West brom and Swansea have similar budget yet they have done far better than Wigan

Re: Martinez to Everton
Everton do not have massive debts but they do have debts to finance. A decent portion of the new television money will be going toward off-the-pitch things.

Re: Martinez to Everton
Has done fantastic so far. Really impressed with his style and how he changes his tactics to suit the situation. Specially today and last week.
My Everton friends don't even remember who their last manager was
Although i wonder where they will end up eventually since the top 5 is so difficult to get into.
