He also says that Wenger is very keen to add more British players to his squad. Assuming that's true, then it wouldn't be Dan Crowley, as he wouldn't be going into the first team squad.

If it's anyone, it's probably Ashley Williams. At least, if it is, it'd tie in with some of the news we've had today about us agreeing personal terms with him.

For me, it'd be strange us for to sell Vermaelen and replace him with Williams, and even stranger to sign Williams as a fourth choice centre back. Quality-wise, there's little difference between them and I think Vermaelen is the better player. Williams, perhaps, is a better leader and more consistent, but it wouldn't be an acquisition that's necessary at this stage. If we got a really good offer for Vermaelen - £15mil plus, for example - then I'd consider selling, but as it is, I don't see a reason to sell him, nor do I see the need for four centre backs of that quality.

It's not too far a stretch for Rooney to join us, since no matter where he goes, it's going to be a step-down from United unless he ends up at Barcelona or Bayern, and I wouldn't be surprised if we actually did have interest. However, it's very difficult to see us genuinely trying to buy him, since his fee would be above £20mil and his wages would be twice as much as our current top earner. We're just not in for those sorts of players, no matter how people claim we're willing to spend big this summer.

Is it bad that it's been only a week since the season finished and I'm already bored of these transfer rumours? Every day it seems there's a new exclusive that we're after Rooney, Jovetic or Higuain but it's just different outlets recycling the same stuff. The transfer window isn't even open yet ffs.

Just thinking out loud. Don't know how much credence to give them, but I'm just a little excited by the Rasmus Elm rumors.

A really solid DM/CM type is crucial, but right now I suspect Wenger won't want to bench Arteta in this sort of role, and anyone we get will start out at least as a rotation kind of player. That's tricky - you can't really spend £20 million on a player who will just sit bench behind Arteta, Ramsey, or Wilshere. But at the same time you don't necessarily want to screw up completely a formula that was just starting to cohere. Arteta has been very important and may even get the armband next year; Ramsey really, truly delivered in the second half of the past season; and we all know Wilshere will keep evolving. You want someone good enough to put pressure on these guys, but I don't know if it's crucial to look & spend wildly for a Javi Martinez-like player. So a player like Rasmus Elm might be ideal - good long shot & free kicks, big, physical, no longer "young and promising," and perhaps capable of playing our game.

A player like Elm and a really quality forward (the "marquee" signing), plus a few shrewd lower-profile acquisitions to round out the squad, could propel the team to the next level without disrupting some of the harmony that the squad have found in the past few months.
