People need to stop believing everything a coach says is undisputable fact. It's simply not true.

To assume he would just pop into a new role and be the undisputed No.1 player there is stupid to say the least.

Well, Piszczek was a very mediocre striker when he played at Hertha. Kloppo took him for nothing and turned him into a pretty good RB now. If you look at it just from Messi's attributes, he would be able to make deadly overlapping runs, too. IMO it just depends on the coach, what he wants of him and what he could convince him to do. (And please just ignore the fact for a moment that he is a superstar etc and just look at what he has and what he'd need for the job).

If I remember correctly Piszczek was already playing RB when BVB signed him.

Well, he played a lot of positions at Hertha, albeit not really convincingly. Kloppo managed to bring out the best in him.

I don't think Messi could play CB as his aerial game is weak which is pretty self explanatory. But he can play well as a RB provided he has a high work rate. Like Lahm or Alves.

I'm pretty sure Messi ain't even close to it. There is more to being a fullback other than overlapping, work rate and tackling. (ie positioning for example)

He shits on Ronaldo all day every day - defense , no defense . who cares? - he's a better player, a better scorer, a more talented individual and what not. If maximizing Messi's statistical output (which would be very high regardless of commitment to pressing or not) at the sacrifice of winning games is Barca's objective, so be it - you won't find me shedding any tears.

But being given that privilege and then quietly sitting on the bench when his team needs him most? That' won't cut it.

Ronaldo has qualities which will make him a better defender than Messi if tasked with the role. He's better in the air and thus better at defending set pieces, he has better speed and recovery which are particularly essential qualities.

You put Messi anywhere on the pitch - he'll still be the same player, put him at centre back, left back - whatever - he'll still have a profound impact on attack . Which is probably what Guardiola meant when he said this. That makes him a great player - not a great defender.
