It's as simple as this:

If they re-invest 63 mil, there's no problem. But if they don't re-invest adequately, they are screwed and will embarrass Serie A in Europe.

There is a marked difference between the ambition shown between Napoli and Udinese in recent years and as such, even if Cavani does depart for foreign shores, one can be confident that Napoli will make a strong effort to invest their funds wisely to not simply compensate for his departure but strengthen the team further.

They are a team short on elite talent, and as such their investment needs to be very astute. Experiments such as Vargas have proven costly and if such a significant piece as Cavani is to leave then they will certainly need to ensure that their midfield and defence are brought up to scratch. The most likely bet to replace Cavani is Osvaldo, another imposing forward who is mobile, hard working and technically similar, however also far more profligate.

The question of how they will manage Hamsik, their plans for replacing Maggio and reinforcing their spine requires knowlege of Mazzari's plans for the future. His potential departure could open up the possibility of a tactical revolution, not to mention an actual rotation policy to prevent the death of key first team members from exhaustion.

Napoli can do far more with 61 million than Inter, Milan, Roma, Udinese, or Lazio. Even if they only re-invest half of it they will still find gems of players elsewhere.

I don't see what the problem is. They're one of the best run clubs in the country. Unlike Inter or Milan they're not drowning in debt (so they don't need to spend the transfer money on paying it off with little squad reinestment), unlike Udinese they are not a vehicle for the club's owner to solely profit, & unlike Roma they don't have an inconsistent squad based off green players. While Lazio and maybe Inter would probably do well if they made the CL I don't see why now that Cavani is gone they are suddenly a fodder team.

Some graphs from the swiss rambler:

The net debt (total debt - cash) has been steadily going down since De Laurentiz took over

with Cavani on the verge on moving out of serie A , is it still beneficial for serie A to have Napoli in CL 6%2BNapoli%2BSerie%2BA%2BProfit

One of the only 3 clubs to be making an accounting profit in 2009-10

Napoli are my second club, the support and atmosphere in the Stadio San Paolo is, in my opinion, the best in the world when full.

If they sell Cavani I have no doubt they will still be a threat in Europe next season. They were so unlucky against the eventual champions last season and basically all bar 2 (Cavani & Lavezzi) will be there.

Maggio, Inler, Pandev & Hamsik are quality players and if they get something in the region of €60m for Edison that is enough to buy 2 world class players.

No team will relish coming to Naples next season. Forza Napoli!
