Glad to see myself and Alex are on the same page here.I consider him to be Juve's best as well at the moment.Chiellini is Juve's most important defender though.(There's a difference between best and most important imo).
And he's a Top 5 CB easily for me atleast. Most underrated defender in Europe for sure.

I'll admit Varane is good but come on, on the same level as Silva, Chiellini and Hummels?

Re: Best Defender in the Game
Silva is injured half a season.
Hummels is a glorified Pique whom no one watches regularly (otherwise you'd know about his average season) and whom no one scrutinizes because he's playing for Dortmund where reaching the CL knockout stages = huge success whereas Pique is playing for a team where getting knocked out in the semi-finals or losing 2 games in a row = end of an era.
Ramos is too rash, error prone, can't defend set pieces and has disciplin issues.
Pepe = Ramos without the "can't defend set pieces" part but infinitely more of a maniac and very error prone as well.
Varane.
Vidic. Never rated him that highly, even in his prime. Torres used to make him his bitch at Liverpool, Eto'o made him his uber bitch, Messi nutmegged him for fun in the last CL final. Plus: he's dirty. Handball incident at the World Cup comes to mind and then he did the same against Arsenal the next season ...
I used to rate Chiellini until I saw Fabregas outpacing him. I guess he got an excuse though with his injury at that time.
Meeeh, they all suck. Nesta is probably the best, even at this stage of his career.

He plays for Real Madrid. Once someone puts on that jersey they are either
a) the best in the world in their position
b) will be the best in the world once they've 50-75 games played.
It is known.

Re: Best Defender in the Game
Best defender in the game based on form or skill or both?! Form wise, as much as people don't want to admit, Varane ranks high but still trails the likes of Barzagli & Bonucci (I feel like just writing the entire Juventus backline honestly).
Skill wise, well, Thiago Silva and that is just about that for me. Everyone else trails that guy.

I response to most of this thread.
Players like Barzagli, Chiellini, Thiago Silva, and ill give it to Varane (even though its early) do the one thing you need your defenders to do the best: They hardly ever make mistakes. Pepe (has a lot of haters) is a good defender. He's strong and fast and has decent positioning but makes mistakes and is reckless... not good in the latter stages of a tournament where cooler heads prevail.. Ramos, futbol summed it up perfectly.
Hummels also makes a lot of mistakes. TBF, he's a good player but people on this forum spank it to BvB so much and act like every player on that team is the second coming of whoever the f*ck. They are a good team with very good players, Im not hating on them but Hummels makes a lot of mistakes. Not even close to the best defender in the world.
Barzagli and Tiago Silva make literally no mistakes. Thats not the only thing that defines a good defender, but combine that with the fact that they rarely get beat one v one, and are monsters in the air.
and seriously, LOL at Ramos and Pepe = to Silva

thats a fair analysis. Natural skill its TS all the way. But again, is it individual brilliance on a mediocre defense that beats out the bright spot of an amazing back line?

The individual brilliance gets more noticed because of the inept surroundings around him similar to a pretty woman standing around her not so pretty friends. The bright spot of an amazing back line still wins out because he is playing in a system that suits not only suits his style of play but serves as a main component in the defensive set up.
The problem with Mr. Individual brilliance is that he in vulnerable to the elements i.e the same amount of praise he gets would be doubled or tripled in venom laced criticism when he cocks up [which he would eventually].
Which is what awaits dear Varane but I must admit, the man really does look the part and puts the likes of Pepe and Ramos to real shame. Oh and two defenders should be mentioned are Pique and Ferdinand. Going by form, they have been pretty good this season or for the most part of it.

Re: Best Defender in the Game
the only one i have ever seen give Rio Ferdinand on this forum is Cyberman. 2-3 years ago, he was definitely top3-4 defender in the world. Has definitely fallen off the pace but is having a resurgence. I am glad for him.
Had this thread been made last season my undisputed pick would have been Vincent Kompany

Re: Best Defender in the Game
Pique and Ferdinand have been outstanding when i have watched them.
The problem with Pique is though his partners consist of a part timer in Puyol no disrespect to Puyol he was elite in his day but his time is gone and Mascherano who isn't even a CB
Get a proper CB next to him and he will probably get noticed by a lot more people.
Kompany like a lot of City players have suffered at the hands of Mancini, change the manager and i'm pretty certain he will be back.

Re: Best Defender in the Game
Not many will give Pique the respect he deserves, based on last season.
If he was judged on this season alone, he wouldnt be in the conversation with someone like Silva, but he has been better than those 2 clowns in Madrid for damn sure.

Re: Best Defender in the Game
I personally wouldn't measure anyone to Pepe or Ramos this season. They have been average to just plain awful.
Ramos actually is a massive disappointment. He had a good season last year which made better viewing when he and and his man-child buddy Pique formed a good partnership for Euros.
Ramos decided to continue being a man child and regressed while Pique turned a corner and improved nicely.

Doc im glad to see that you have a non biased approach to evaluating Ramos... most madridistas get a little touchy when mentioning him with a negative aspect.

If it were discussing last season, I would have defended Ramos but he has regressed...badly. To a point where a 19 year noob is showing him up.
