Gael Clichy: I joined Manchester City because I want to win things
The Frenchman claims that he quit Arsenal to win silverware at Eastlands and suggests that there is "no limit" as to what the FA Cup holders can achieve in the future
The full-back completed his move from Arsenal on Monday afternoon, signing a four-year deal with Roberto Mancini’s side and he has set his sights on winning trophies at Eastlands in the coming years.
“I joined City because I want to win things, and you always progress with competition,” he told the club’s official website.
“It’s going to be difficult but I can’t wait.
“I’m really excited, the stadium is great and I can’t wait to meet the lads. It’s a new life for me, a new chapter but I’m really looking forward to it because it’s an amazing challenge.”
And the Frenchman will be an immediate hit with the club’s supporters following a taunt at the fans of local rivals Manchester United saying: “I understand [City fans] are the people who live in Manchester, so it’s good I won’t be bothered by United fans.”
The 25-year-old admitted he had been impressed with the progress that City have made in the past and hoped things would continue to improve
“Year after year you can see [City] getting stronger and stronger,” he continued.
“Bringing new players in [all the time], the squad is big but it’s not just numbers.
“The names are amazing, there is a group from abroad and group of English players which is important. The fans are crazy and amazing. I hope these four years will be really big.”
The full-back was part of the 'Invincibles' Arsenal side that went through the 2003-04 season unbeaten and Clichy promised to give his new side 100 per cent and show the City fans exactly what he can do.
“I will just try to do my best for the team and defend well,” he admitted.
“To have a strong back four can help a team go all the way in the league and Champions League so I will just try my best to play as I know how to play.
“I have to adjust, I hope we gel quickly and I can’t wait to train and [play my] first game. I will have to work a lot to adapt with new team-mates but I’m sure this will be a few good years for me.
“Speed is one of my qualities, I try to use it as much as possible, and I hope show the fans I’m a great player and a great signing for the club.”
Clichy is the first arrival at City this summer, with many more speculated to be joining him, and the Frenchman admits that he believes the club could begin to dominate English and European football over the coming years, if they continue to develop.
“I don’t think there is a limit in City,” he added.
“What the club is doing is phenomenal, last year was a big year and I hope we carry on progressing like this with the players we have.
“For the club there is no limit, the Champions League is a big competition and it will be difficult as it’s our first time.
“The Premier League is something you want to win because it shows you are the best team, the FA Cup was done last year and hopefully we can repeat it and the Carling Cup is still a good trophy.”
Thoughts?
Talk about a massive dig before departing!

Who is he trying to fool, he went to city make more money, winning trophies lol, and to go against United he has already dead man walking.
They won a FA cup by fluke and this guy fall in love with them lol, did he forget he was part of the invincible. Arsenal fans are happy he left, I just cant wait for the day Arsenal vs Man city.

To be fair, City's short term future is looking much more prosperous than Arsenal's.

Cliche Clichy.
Can't really see City win anything in the near future either.

They will win things. they have had a taste of it now by winning the FA cup, they will get the odd domestic cup here and there. They are spending far too much money and strengthening too much, can't really see them not winning or competing for trophies in the near future.

True, maybe something here and there, but nothing significant. I can't see them competing for the championship
or in Europe tbh, especially with Chelsea on the rise again.

If u spend obscene amount of money u will eventually win the league sooner rather than later. That is a fact
United did that Chelsea did that now City are doing it nothing new.Wont be long before they win the league tbh.

Was about to say the same thing after reading some of the above comments. You spend cash money, you win trophies. It's as simple as that. A sad fact of modern day football.BeautifulGame wrote:If u spend obscene amount of money u will eventually win the league sooner rather than later. That is a fact

Manchester City will be a legitimate threat to win every competition they take part in this season.

If you were referring to my comment, City is a threat because they're stacked with talent across the board, with Gael Clichy or not.Lex wrote:Because they bought...............Clichy?

Thats because CL have created a parity between teams and now one need Suger daddy to compete with the likes of United who spent obscene already.Man U, Arsenal (who have not been afraid to splash the cash in some decades), Liverpool being regularly in top 4, thus getting a lot of extra money and prestige for that year in year out, has done a lot more to ensure other clubs can't consistently get into the top 4 then anything else.So u need a suger daddy to break into these top tier no other way.
There is no difference btw generating money by commercial ventures or having sugger dabby the fact is United out spent their rivals to achieve succes just like Chelsea did and now City are doing. No point moaning now when u were using the same way to success all these years.

You really didn't get my point did you? There's a difference between spending money you have earnt and have a right to spend, without spending obscene amount of money on every single player out there. And another thing, it was our big influx of the youth players of 92 that played a huge part in our dominance of the mid 90's and beyond. we on rare occasion spent big money to get top talent.
We usually get young talented players and mould them into superstars/ great players. Hell, even LFC has spent far more money than Utd in the last 6 years or so.
Not like Chelsea and City who won the lottery and went from being mid table/mediocre teams to title winning/CL qualifying teams.

well, if you only talk about the scrubs they are sure not threatening, but it's a lot of experienced depth nonetheless.
how about kompany, toure, de jong, silva, balo, tevez etc...?

Where is this right to spent because sky pumped lots of money and u got money by commercial revenue? There's is nothing different between that and having a suger daddy.
The fact is because of sky money there is a parity between big teams and other teams. So only way in bridging the gap is having a suger daddy.United earnt money not just because of success but because of sky money and generated commercial revenue by marketing strategies. Why do u think Everton are poorer despite being the 3rd successful club in England if success brings money?
Not like city or Chelsea and only spent on kids and mould them? Spending 30 mil on Ferdinend? 30 mil on Veron? In today's market it is worth 50 mil.Basically united spent 30mil on a 20 year defender 10 years ago and are now complaining City are ruining market.Talk about hypocrisy
Basically United are using Sky money and City are using Arab money.Nothing different.
