Monreal is a very good player and we're lucky to have him as backup, which team has a better backup LB? Let's not kid ourselves here, Monreal is a spanish international and many CL teams would love to have him. Some poor performances don't equate a poor signing because he's had very good performances as well.

Tbf Monreal wasn't a panic buy as a whole, Wenger had a deal for him in place for the summer but Gibbs' injury accelerated the process, that's why we heard so little about bidding or personal terms. Everything was on the table, Wenger just had to ask to do it sooner.

Monreal is not a bad player but he is yet to show us that he is good enough to be a starter at the club. He is good against average opposition because we control possession and he doesn't have to do much defending. He has been absolutely garbage against good teams who put him under pressure and test how good he is defensively.

Let's put that in perspective. We've been absolute garbage against good teams.

Monreal could be asleep and still be more positionality aware than Santos

Much better from Nacho so far, still think Gibbo will be back in the starting line up once he is fit

He's been playing very well recently. Hope he doesn't have to play CB this season.

He's been so good this season. I am a massive Gibbs fan but Monreal has been better than him. The only time he struggles is when he is against a pacy player but his positioning is getting better which will compensate. He is a lot like Zabaleta.

Gibbs started off well this season, but as soon as Monreal got his chance he has definitely upstaged Gibbo. They're both really good at this moment of time, so I'll leave it to Wenger to make the decision.

He has really stepped it up tho this season. He did okay for his first half season when he came. Last season he was pretty dross, as said tho this season he has been impressive.

Arsène Wenger says Nacho Monreal’s dedication and experience makes him a perfect role model for his Arsenal team-mates.

The Spain international has signed a new deal with the club after impressing since his arrival from Malaga in January 2013.

Wenger is delighted that Monreal has committed his future to the club, and says he sets a positive example the entire squad.

“He is a very important player at the club because he can play left-back and centre back,” the manager told Arsenal Player. "He has the consistency in his performances that is requested at the top level.

“Overall, his attitude has been absolutely fantastic on a daily basis since he arrived here. He’s 100 per cent committed and I think as well he has always improved since he has arrived and has shown that in many big games as well.

“He’s calm, focused and dedicated. He’s well-accepted and loved by his partners. He has the modest approach of a player who wants to give his best to the team. Everybody senses that and that’s why I think it’s important for the club to have that stability.

“Everyone in the Premier League would say that he has become a very strong player. Arsenal are gifted at the moment, I must say, with two top-class left backs. We have many young players. They need to be surrounded by experienced players, especially at the back.

"We now have experience at the back. Nacho is part of that - he’s a good example for the young players and we have a good bunch of young players. We have seen another one with Alex Iwobi the other day, who has shown talent. They need to see how you behave at that level.”

What i love about him the most is his technique. For a LB he is really good with the ball. Makes intelligent decisions

What I like about him the most is that he keeps quiet off the pitch and does the talking on the pitch.

Great news. Consummate professional and one of the best LBs around. Has greatly improved, especially 1v1 and offers a lot going forward. Shame he hasn't been capped for Spain since joining, especially in the last 1-2 years.
