Barcelona invests €20M/year in La Masia. Bayern only €3M
sauce: http://www.soccerissue.com/2012/10/01/invest-in-your-future/
I like the flawed conclusion though:
Ouriel Daskal wrote:We’ll start with a joke/story.
A tourist stopped next to the Longleat House and was so amazed by its lawn, he asked the gardener what’s his secret. The gardener replied:
“It’s easy remove overhanging shade from plants, shrubs and trees. Improve drainage every spring and autumn by removing moss and thatch, then use a hollow-tine all over to aerate the lawn, and fill the resulting holes with sharp sand. If it’s a shady lawn, and you can’t remove the cause, broadcast grass seed for shady areas after the above. Now, do this for 200 years and you`ll have a lawn like this at your home”.
This is, in a nutshell, “Barcelona’s great secret”.The great report on youth academies in Europe, commissioned by the European Club Association reveals the lengths Barca go to in order to get the best young talents into their academy.
The Catalans spend around €10m a year on operating La Masia and a further €10 million on the formation of an under-19 squad and Barcelona B.
36 coaches are employed by the club in order to ensure the 220 youth players in attendance at La Masia follow the philosophy and guidelines of the club.
Barca employ 25 scouts to pick up the very best talent, with all players from eight-year-olds up to the Under-19′s do the same passing and intercepting drills throughout their time at La Masia.
Now, this has been going on for 25 years now and that’s why Barcelona can turn up to a game with 11 players who grew up in the club and probably win it.
By compression, Ajax spend €6m on their academy (a more significant % of their income than Barcelona spend on their academy, which explains why Ajax have so many academy graduates in their first team). Inter, surprisingly, also spend €6m a year on their academy (Like French Lens). Sporting Lisbon (responsible for creating Luis Figo, Cristiano Ronaldo, Nani and more) spend €5m a year on their academy.
Arsenal and Bayern Munich spend €3m each on their academy and it works well for them, as a lot of their first team members are academy graduates.
I like the flawed conclusion though:
Ouriel Daskal wrote:However, it is safe to assume that if you spend €20m a year on your academy for 25 years, your entire first team will be composed from your academy graduates – saving you hundred of millions on transfers and agent fees. €20m for clubs like Arsenal, Manchester United, Bayern Munich or Chelsea, are not even 10% of their income.

I think the point was that the ending concluded that Barcelona wont spend as much as other teams in the transfer market, when in fact they are as bad or worse than Real madrid

You need to spend in order to win, even more if you want to keep winning.

20 million over 25 years is 500 million...
Real spent around 1 billion 200+ million since 2000 alone...

what's so funny about it? sure they spent a ton of money on shit players but think how much more they'd have to spend if two thirds of their team weren't homegrown...

Well, if Bayern really spend only 3 mio on their Academy, then they work really efficiently, considering that Lahm, Schweinsteiger, Müller, Badstuber, Alaba (partly), Kroos (partly), Contento and several other who now ply their trade in other clubs (e.g. Hummels, Kraft...) were from their academy...

The difference obviously is that Madrid in that case are buying ready made players, who will contribute to the team the moment they arrive, not 10 years later and only around the last quadrant of that 25 years period. Plus, a lot of the time they buy well known better, who'll help the merchandising department and the club image as a whole, again, you could only say that about a handfull of Barca's youth players, and it only takes affect a\fter they're integrated into the first team, again about 10 years after their recruitment.
Now, I'm not saying Barca's model is bad, I'm just saying it's not a simple 1 billion > 500 comparison.

..and this is the reason why Barca has produced better homegrown players than Bayern or Ajax over the last decade.
This is also the reason why Barca has been the most successful club in the world over the last decade.

Given that perfectly average role players now cost between 20-30M (Kolarov, Carroll, etc) I'd wager that we're still saving a significant amount of money on transfers. Not to mention that if we only invest 20 per year and the prices of players keep escalating as it is then it makes even more sense.

Both Kolarov and Carroll are extremes. Kolarov was expensive only because it was Man City knocking on the door, and Carroll went for a pretty penny because he's English.
Average players cost somewhere in the region of $5-$10 million in today's market.

lol what? We have spent £647.5m since 2000 on transfers, factoring in sales as well.
Barcelona, using the same factors, has spent considerably less, only £401.2m since 2000.
