Re: Is Copa America a serious competetion??
There are no qualifiers. But, more teams= more games=more money. The guest does ruin it. Becuase you can have japan as south American champion which makes no sense.Adit wrote:exactly my point. At least some one with sense who wont jump to "obvious troll is obvious " band wagon before understanding the thread.Messi wrote:I was actually thinking the same thing, did some research because the african cup,Euro, asian cups are pretty serious with qualifying stages before the tournment itself.
SO turns out in South america there are only 10 countries that play football so they don't need qualifying stages. But they need 12 nations to start a tournament, So each time they invite 2 outsider nations. So mexico is pretty much a guest, They were only allowed by concacaf to send the U23 Olympic team+5 over aged players. This year they invite mexico, japan, spain. Spain and japan decline and were replaced with costa rica.
this Guest part in this tournament is really weak and plays down the importance of the trophy.Whats the point of qualifiers then?? LMAO

Re: Is Copa America a serious competetion??
Im going to make 10 strong sons so that in future i could make a football team and win Copa america..
Re: Is Copa America a serious competetion??
Bro, it's a business strategy. By inviting the likes of Japan and Mexico the Copa stands to make more money because it now has an opening in the Asian and North American markets. Additionally, these countries that are considered 'giants in their own region' get a chance to weigh themselves vs. real competition. Everybody wins.

These guests are still of a higher quality than San Marino or Latvia so I don't see how it loses a competitive edge vs the Euro Cup.

Re: Is Copa America a serious competetion??
They would have qualifiers and would not have guests if they had more teams...
Too bad there are only like 10 teams in the Commembol and about 13 countries in South America while in Europe there are about 50...

having only 10 teams is a big reason why copa is inferior to even african nations cup.Maurotaurox wrote:They would have qualifiers and would not have guests if they had more teams...

Agreed, their region shouldn't be belittled because they have few teams. There are 4-5 quality SA teams and 5-6 quality European NTs. They shouldn't be compared by who has qualifying and who doesn't... Let's compare results in recent WCs. (which Europe will slightly edge them)

Re: Is Copa America a serious competetion??
its not about soth america vs europe guys, its about copa america, the relevence of that trophy is far inferior to euro cup and african nations cup.
Those tournaments have some basic strategy to start with, while copa is like "do you wanna play,?" No. "oh come on,just send some random players here,no body cares" Ok then.

Gold Cup qualifies Mexico for the Confederations cup so they will place it as their priority.

copa america is a success only in terms of business strategy then.BarrileteCosmico wrote:Adit wrote:its not about soth america vs europe guys, its about copa america, the relevence of that trophy is far inferior to euro cup and african nations cup.

I have yet to receive a explanation for why not having a qualifier isnt a step down for copa?

Like I said, they cannot have qualifiers because they have a limited amount of teams. If they had qualifiers only like 5 teams would enter and it would not be a very entertaining cup.

Re: Is Copa America a serious competetion??
you proved my point actually, having only 10 teams is a big reason why copa isnt regarded as a big tourney,at least in my books. There isnt enough teams to start a proper competetion.Maurotaurox wrote:Adit wrote:copa america is a success only in terms of business strategy then.BarrileteCosmico wrote:Adit wrote:its not about soth america vs europe guys, its about copa america, the relevence of that trophy is far inferior to euro cup and african nations cup.

copa is as serious as mexico sending their u-23 team.
Mexico is a guest, they werent going to play two big tournaments back to back when they could pick one to try and try out some younger talent a chance

Re: Is Copa America a serious competetion??
TBF Brasil, Argentina and Uruguay are the only teams worth anything in the Copa America. The rest are not that good/do not have a chance.
Where as the Euro's you have Spain, Netherlands, Germany, England, Italy, Portugal, France and the like.
The Euro's is a much harder competition to win, that much is certain. But that takes nothing away from the prestige of the Copa America.
You just have to look at the winners of the Copa America to realise what I am saying is true and in turn compare that to the winners of the Euro Cup. With the Euro Cup you have a much broader list of winners and no one truly stands above the rest.
The competition for the Euro is alot harder to win. Is it more prestigious, I don't think so.
