The England national football team represents England in football and is controlled by the Football Association, the governing body for football in England. England is the oldest national football team in the world alongside Scotland, whom they played in the world's first international football match in 1872. England is one of the United Kingdom's Home Nations, meaning that it is permitted by FIFA to maintain its own national side.England's home ground is Wembley Stadium, London and their manager is Roy Hodgson.
England contest the FIFA World Cup and UEFA European Football Championships which alternate biennially. England won the World Cup in 1966, when they hosted the finals, defeating West Germany 4–2 in extra time in the final. Their best performance since was a semi final appearance in 1990. England have never won the UEFA European Football Championship – their best performance being a semi final appearance at the 1968 and 1996 Championships.

England played against Ukraine on Tuesday and the game finished 1-1.What's wrong with the national football team of England? They always had players with potential but their coaches couldn't create a strategy to help them improve their team-play.

Roy Hodgson is a mediocre coach in my opinion. He is good at teams like WBA, Southampton, QPR etc. but not at the national team.Choosing him as a coach was a huge mistake made by the English Football Association(FA).

I think England has the problem that many players have inflated egos and the public demands their superstars as they are used to them from the PL. Thus any England coach is forced to field the biggest superstars (Rooney, Lampard, Gerrard etc) whether they fit into the system or not.

Drop Gerrard. Drop Johnson.

Seriously though.

They really should hire a younger manager. And shouldn't demand success straight away in terms of results. The whole squad needs a overhaul. There are way too many aged players in the team, it's stupid. Keep 1 or so experienced players in midfield, defence, and forward and bleed in the youth.

It's time to play the likes of the Cleverley, Chamberlain, Hendo (going to get flamed here), Wilshere, McEachran etc. Leave Rooney in there, and build the team around him.

Make Hart the captain and leave Gerrard alone. The FA should do him a favour and let him get his 100 caps first, though. Razz

cleverley and chamberlain are getting chances, wilshere was a regular starter before injury, welbeck and sturridge get chances as well, henderson isnt good enoiugh, and mceachran wont be playing for england if he cant get in swanseas team. So yeah, i think they are playing all the young players they possibly can, the rest are simply not good enough yet

Even Carrick and Rio Ferdinand could have been more useful at EURO 2012 than Lescott & Scott Brave Scotty Parker.Roy Hodgson isn't good at all when it comes about the national team of England.

England will never be a great team until they find a natural Number 10. Gazza was the closest thing as far as I know. They will never be looked upon as a team which deserves proper international respect until the day they start to add a creative spark to their play.England has always distinctively lacked something that makes football the most unique and widely followed sport in the world. The word is "flair". That is something that no hype on earth can provide for. Just to be on the safer side IMO Razz

There's nothing wrong with Roy Hodgson as England manager. Compared to everyone else, we're an average nation and Hodgson uses the tactics that can get the best out of these players. We only managed a quarter-final appearance in the Euro's because he got a squad of average players playing like a unit and working extremely hard to protect leads.

Since the Euro's, he's switched to three in midfield and has called up plenty of younger players. Against Italy, Moldova and Ukraine we've played passing football - good, attractive football - and have won two and drew a game we should have won, even if the performance on the night was a little lacklustre.

Comments like this:

Roy Hodgson is a mediocre coach in my opinion. He is good at teams like WBA, Southampton, QPR etc. but not at the national team.Choosing him as a coach was a huge mistake made by the English Football Association(FA).

Are really wide of the mark. England, at the moment, are going through transition where their older, more notable players like John Terry, Rio Ferdinand, Ashley Cole, Scott Brave Scotty Parker, Gareth Barry, Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard are reaching their 30's or mid-30's and playing less and less, but there aren't many ready-made players we can just call up to help the process of moving on from these players.

Hodgson, though, is used to not working with star names and highly talented groups of players. We're going to have average squads every now and again and he will know how to get the best out of them, as he's already proven.

What England need right now is patience. There are some young guys there who will need time to find their feet at this level, and to adapt to the sort of style we're trying to use now. We've got players like Butland, Jones, Smalling, Caulker, Bertrand, Gibbs, Walker, Rodwell, Wilshere, Cleverley, Henderson, Chamberlain, Sturridge and Welbeck who have all received caps at one point or another. Then we've got guys like Flannagan, Kelly, Robinson, Barkley, McEachran, Shelvey, Sterling, Afobe and Wickham who are all promising young players.

We're working towards a future now and it's going to take time, but if we continue to make improvements like we are doing currently (unlike some who still think we're not doing anything to make things better), we'll see a better England.

Anyway, we've got fixtures against Argentina and Germany at Wembley next year if we win our qualifying group (which I think we will, Ukraine draw aside). Really looking forward to those.

I hope that I am wrong and you are right Smile . Only time will decide this...but i still believe that Hodgson is not a good coach for England, his strategies were poor untill now.

The way England play is killing to watch, and most of the games England haven't actually deserved the outcome

He makes them play like Levante, for a top team you have to play better than that, sure it gets you the results but with all the talent is that how people want England to play??

Just because we surrendered most of the possession in most of our Euro games doesn't mean we didn't deserve the results. In the two friendlies leading up to the Euros, and in our three group games, the opposition hardly had any clear scoring opportunities while we were clinical with our limited chances. Italy quarter-final not-withstanding, we deserved those results.

At that time, the majority of the fans knew that the squad was poor and were happy to see the players give everything on the pitch. Nobody was expecting or even asking for a good standard of football. We just wanted to do the best we could.

Now that the Euro's are over, we want to see progress being made towards a better style of football. In the friendly against Italy, we tried to take the game to them and got a 2-1 win out of it. We easily beat Moldova - granted, it's very weak opposition, but we didn't resort to overly physical or kick and rush tactics to do it. The Ukraine performance wasn't as good, but still playing the same way: no hoofing, no kick and rush, no extreme defensive tactics.

We aren't "playing like Levante" anymore and the only time you'll see us use those tactics now are probably against the real big boys - Spain, Germany, Argentina, Brazil, Netherlands - and no one will care if we do if we get a positive result. Just look at the reaction after we beat Spain, for example. It was smash and grab but people were ecstatic.
