Re: Essien to Moudrid
Essien lost everything that made him good 2 years ago, people are still rating him because of his name.
He relied almost exclusively on his physical tools as he had no real brain or technique, now he's lost that he's worse than Lass quite frankly.
Oh well all the people that still rate him because of his name will see this eventually.
Always find it incredibly hilarious how people cling on to past it player long time after they are past it hoping they will magically be good again.

He tore his ACL and come back once. He can do it again .

Re: Essien to Moudrid
I saw him play some decent games the year before last TBH.I watched him play some amazing games in the CL 2-3 years ago. This is all after tearing his ACL so he did come back to relative form.
Nonetheless , of course I don't expect anything from him, it speaks volumes that Chelsea is willing to send him on loan to a fellow CL club, but he's a nicer person than Lass and that is all I can wish for.
Plus, as I said, this is a power play for the African market to dry up UNICEF's resources

Re: Essien to Moudrid
How can anyone say Essien only relied on his athleticism? Stupid generalisation tbh.
His loss of it isn't why he's finished. Far from it in fact.

Because that's all he had Gil, stupid to suggest otherwise.
Please tell me what fantastic attributes he had which had nothing to do with his physical attributes?
Yaya >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
tbh.

Re: Essien to Moudrid
Essien was the original Yaya ffs with even more freakish athleticism.
Two footed. Could play any single ball on the pitch with ease. Through, reverse, cross field, long, short, outside of the foot etc
His close control was excellent, he had great awareness on the pitch + elite positioning & perhaps most importantly he didn't bottle 50-50's.

Re: Essien to Moudrid
History revisionists you gotta love em
His passing was nowhere near Yaya's level not even close, his close control was not excellent it was decent.
Agree on awareness, positioning is complete BS tho...... he was constantly out of position it was athleticism that got him back into positions.
There is no coincidence that he suddenly got crap when he lost his pace and strength none at all.
Yaya will get the same, only difference being is Yaya is a fantastic passer and a goal threat so he still has that going for him.

Re: Essien to Moudrid
I could not disagree more Mole....positioning is BS, but in terms of passing , range, awareness he was one of the best.
Also he was actually a goal threat , he simply didn't play as a second striker half the the time as Yaya does.
Anyway in his prime he was better than Yaya for me, Yaya's prime is now and defensively he offers very very little compared to the force that Essien was.

Why are you speculating Essien's age, were you there when he was born

I think he is about 34, can't believe that he is only 29, seems impossible

well, believe what you want . the guy played AFCON with an injury like Kaka did in 2010. Then, they have been carrying injuries for years ...
he is born in 1982 so in 2003 he was 21 . there is a pic of him at 21

Well I just find it as hard to believe that Essien is 29, as I found it hard to believe Luke Perry was a teenager in 90210

He might be a bit older than 29 but I don't think he's that much older tbh.
edit; Oh I see that as usual any one who doesn't agree with Mole is wrong (according to mole).

um because there is an obvious gap in what people believe to be his age and his reported age...
you have to be at someone's birth to speculate on someones age? what are you the king of what can and cannot be discussed?

Essien is not 29
Probably soomething like 34-35. It is very common in Africa.

Stop....
Prime Essien was a great football player. He was the perfect mix between physical abilities and technique. He had everything. One of the best player that ever played for us. He was even better at Lyon than he was at Chelsea.

Re: Essien to Moudrid
Ya.
I watched the Under 17 world cup. In 2007 we played every team off the park until we met Nigeria in the final , it wasn't even close and then in the final Nigeria just dominated.
All those guys, Adiyah,Rabiu Ibrahim etc, I don't even think the made it. But that might just be to poor structures.
I think Essien tore both ACL's , that's the biggest reason for his downfall. He may be 1-3 years older that it says on his birth certificate but that's not why he's in his current state.

Okocha may have been 10 years older than his official age.
hey have finally come up with a foolproof way of determining real age. Ahead of last year's Under-17 World Cup in, as it happened, Nigeria, the governing body announced that players would be subjected to wrist scans using magnetic resonance imaging, and this would determine their true age.
That led some countries to undertake precautionary scans beforehand. The results were never announced, but Nigeria suddenly discarded 15 squad members, while Gambia omitted 11 of the 18 who had helped them to victory in the African Under-17 championship a few months earlier. Reports claim that retrospective analyses of the previous three Under-17 World Cups showed more than a third of all players were too old.
