Pique, Puyol, Fontas, Abidal...all 4 will get used in games before him.

Fontas is awful and definitely worse than Botia. Shame that we didn't buy back Botia. I don't rate Fontas, from all of this La Masia defenders I think he is the worst, too slow. Bartra, Muniesa and Sergi Gomez IMO have more chances of making it than Fontas.

Fontas is awful based on what?

He is very confortable on the ball, very composed, he strong and plays very mature.

He is slow, thats his main weakness.

Bartra cant tackle, he has great speed but he quick weak and again, cant tackle.

Muniesa and Sergi Gomez are babies, Fontas is much closer to being ready to play for us then those two.

True, but we have 3 CB, why not buy Botia for €2M, he would be good competition for Fontas, one of them is going to be very good in future. It is not big money, if he is not good enaugh we can sell him for same mony on end of the season.

My choice would be Thiago Silva, even for €30M + €5M bonuses (Maxwell out). We are still good enaugh with Masche/Abidal on CB and Adriano on LB, but if we don't buy Cesc, we should use that money for Thiago Silva.

I also wouldnt want anyone other then Abidal at leftback for a big game.

So, if one of Pique and Puyol are missing, it would be nice to have someone of a high level. Doesnt have to be Puyol leve but not miles away.

But who? We need fast CB with good footwork. If you could choose anyone (including RM players) who would be 3rd CB for us?
Puyol is 33, 2 more years and it is over.

Very nice detailed explanation. I will repeat what I read in an article recently. With Puyol's age and Abidal's health problems, if Pique were to ever get injured, Barca would be left with not a single recognized center back. This is quite a big risk to take.

Well said. Even Mascherano as CB, even though it's worked in the past, can be a problem against tall attackers who are good in the air.
