I usually just download a youtube converter off the internet, use it, then uninstall it after. Works well for me lol.

As for specifics, no idea.

What do you need the .avi for? If you just need it for watching, get VLC from http://www.videolan.org - this plays virtually everything.

(As a matter of fact, I just checked - it can transcode stuff, too: http://wiki.videolan.org/Transcode )
