Pfft. Anyone who judges players by the amount of goals and assists they get and is completely ignorant of stats like pass completion %, dribble completion %, tackle completion %, aerial duels % shot accuracy % and overall action % doesn't understand how football works.

Yes, they're such wasteful players and make such little defensive contribution, and it's scary that they've managed to convince people that they're the best players in the world, especially Ronaldo. They are the kind of players that grab the headlines and get clips on youtube and lots of attention in the highlights but in reality, anyone who really understands football should know that they're not nearly the best players in their teams never mind in the world.

In fact the scariest thing is that Ronaldo has managed to convince two of the greatest managers of all time to base their teams around him. I don't care if he gets 100 goals a season, because for every goal he creates, he costs his team one with his lack of quality in general play.

To be fair to Messi, in spire of what I've said, he's pretty damn good, and comparing him to Ronaldo is an insult.

They might be wasteful, but thats part of the job for players designated to break down defences. I agree to an extent that both players have fantastic teammates who are largely responsible for them scoring so many goals, but regardless of that they are still the ones that have to put it in the net. In messi's case he can also do stuff with the ball no one else can currently do

That's what really frustrates me. People rate players on what they're capable of doing rather than their overall level of performance and contribution to the team. I disagree that strikers are supposed to gamble, not as often as they do anyway.

A perfect forward player, in most situations, should hold the ball up and link up with his teammates, move creatively and only play the final ball when a good gap appears after tiring the opposition out with all the possession they'd have, to create easier chances. What Messi does, and Ronaldo in particular, is gamble impatiently in positions where it's very unlikely that they'll be successful. Barcelona will be a better team when Messi matures, but by that time he'll have lost his pace. There's no hope for Ronaldo though, he'll be shit wherever he goes.

Except Messi links with teammates, moves around and plays passes.

Not as well as he should though if he's to be considered amongst the best forward players. He's still too wasteful. Ability-wise, possibly the best but he can be very frustrating. He's become a bit too greedy, unfortunately. The reason why he scores more goals than his teammates is because he is the most impatient so he has a lot more shots. 9 times out of 10, the team would be better off if he was just a little bit more patient in those situations, so they could wait for the perfect moment to play the perfect through ball and score the perfect goal. They would create more chances that way and they would be easier chances to score, plus they would keep possession better so their defence would be less exposed.

I'm being harsh on him though, because he's still a brilliant player. Just not as good as he could be, if, say, my brain was in his body.
