Brazil as a national team are not currently in their greatest era in the year 2012, but their future looks promising and they are set to host arguably the biggest tournament in Brazil's history, the 2014 FIFA World Cup. Now there are many, many issues both inside and outside of the pitch regarding many factors about Brazil's preparations.

Let's focus on the inside of the pitch. We recently saw Brazil put on a good performance vs. The U.S and a not so good one vs. Mexico (of course these weren't A-team Brazil sides) but it's fair to say that Brazil in the last few years has been very on and off. While they did claim the 2009 confederations cup very impressively, the 2010 WC was a bit of a disappointment, as was the 2011 Copa America, for a nation which has the rare distinction of always being the favorite. Always.

The 2014 WC is 2 years away and much can change, for better or worse, in two years time. But given the spectacle that we are all almost promised for this WC, given the once in a lifetime occasion of the WC being hosted in such a football capital and given the fact that Brazil is the winningest nation in the history of the competition but have yet to win it on home soil, I get the feeling that Brazil have been, regardless of any results as of late, more than favorites to win this WC simply because of the fact that it will be played in Brazil.

Now I'm almost sure that no forum member here was alive for the Maracanazo, but we all damn sure know what it was, and what it continues to live on as. A football legend. But of the eight nations who have won the World Cup in its history, 6 have been able to do it at home on at least one occasion. The two who have not? Spain, who won it just 2 years ago for their first time in South Africa and Brazil, the most winningest nation who could've added a sixth title to their name in 2002, had they won their (almost) guaranteed game vs. Uruguay in 1950, at home.

Pretty much everything points to Brazil lifting an almost obligatory WC trophy in 2014 simply because of the scenario. It's Brazil. When would they get another chance to win it at home, after already waiting 62 years? We're talking about the country in which football was not invented but perfected. This may not be their golden era but they have all the time for the youngsters (Oscar, Lucas, Ganso, Neymar, Dede, etc.) to step up and carry on the Seleccao to another WC. This could very well be the biggest, grandest sporting event that there has been up to date period. Like, in history. So if Brazil, who will have an amazing amount of pressure, fail to win the World Cup in 2014, would it generally be considered a complete failure for them??? I think it will for sure, but what are some of your thoughts?

If they manage to play well and inspire the world, it will not be a failure IMO. Remember Germany in 2006.

They will be a failure in their country if they dont win, nothing they can do to change that, local press will pulverize them.

The amount of talent they have is outrageous . Their fans are some of the best in the world and they will always be one of the favourites during any World Cup .

Good attacking football is a given for Brazil , so no , if they don't win this, it will be a failure.

It all depends on how we play. E.g. take our 1982 NT , didn't win the WC but is fondly remembered by all football fans around the world as one of the greatest teams ever. Of course, these days you can't repeat that with a NT, but if we make great performances and lose it , I don't think it will be a total failure, but it will be a huge failure nevertheless.

Hosting this WC will bring nothing good to the country in any terms, we will most certainly lose and then what Nick said.

It would be a failure because they're playing home, but I honestly don't think it would be on footballing terms. Their squad as of right now is not world class, although it could be within 4 years.

If it was anywhere else besides Brazil I would say it wouldn't be a complete failure. But as it is then yes I think it would be.

we were average a couple of years before 94 and were in bad form prior to 2002 (eliminated by honduras in copa america LOL)

lets wait and see,but we havent lost in brazil since 1950,i think we will manage to get at least to the semi finals even with a crap team.
