Honestly I think defenders need their own award that considers only defending when voting.

Sort of like a "defensive player of the year" or something like that.

I think a Wing Back could win it, RC came close....probably shouldve won ahead of Ronaldo in 02.

Basically people just need to respect defensive work and stop jerking off over random meaningless goal stats for any defender to actually have a shot.

Are you saying it's a bad idea? Because I kind of think it would have been great if there was an award great defenders like Maldini, Stam, Hierro had a shot at actually winning. These guys deserved more recognition and it's a shame they don't have more individual awards on their mantles.

Its a good idea, but its the most lame award ever created. Nobody would care about an award called 'The Best Defensive Player of the Year'. Awards have to sound glamorous, awe inspiring. If you know what I mean.

True. But there's the natural bias that everyone has because they can only see through their eyes, and then there's the deluded.

A "Defender of the Year" award would be good.

Defender of the Year is good. But Best player at Defending is just too vague. What if I think Cristiano tracks back particularly well? It also gives no regard to complete defenders.

a defensive award doesnt solve anything, its not about giving some recognition to defenders (eventhough this would be a positive step) the problem is that defensive contribution is not considered as important as scoring goals and that's completely unfair

even when discussion the greatest players of the game we rarely see any defensive player in the top 5 or even top 10

Just make a prestigious defensive award so great defenders don't get ignored.

People seem to forget or not be aware of the fact that defending is much more of a team effort than attacking. If two out of four defenders in the backline are weak while the third is average and the fourth is GOAT. The defensive line will not be better than average. You need 4 strong defenders to have a strong/great backline. As well as a midfield that protects you. Defending is about collective discipline.

While attacking is about creativity, one single genius player can consistently win you games while the rest are average.

Also it's much much easier to spot a stand out performer in attack because numbers will confirm the fact. While the greatest defenders are those who organize their team mates well and lead the defense. And thus make other players appear better than they are. A not very easily countified attribute...

doesn't matter how teamwork the defensive lines are. If the strikers are repeatedly isolated and doesn't have the support. He'll be crappy as well. Gl dribbling through 2-3 defenders a game multiple times. Well....maybe messi can, but you still need a shit ton of efficiency from the midfield to have a clear look
