I don't think one can simply claim that the Germans have lost their knack with penalties, they got past Madrid and to win two consecutive penalty shoot-outs is difficult at the best of times.

In terms of pressure, as a team - regardless of the nationality of the players - the balance of the match played against Bayern's chances in the shootout in my opinion. Having played quite well, taking a deserved lead and failing repeatedly to take their chances, with a star player missing a penalty in normal time - bloody well called it when I was watching but I had wanted Piggy to take it instead of him :vagi: - they were effectively in a lottery to win something they should already have claimed. In a shoot-out, the idea of backs to the wall appeals more to me than the thought that you can't lose what you should already have.

In that sense the final and subsequent shoot-out reminded me of Italy vs the Netherlands in Euro 2000.

We let Bayern off the hook in our penalty shoot out imo. Even then Beyrn missed two penalties.

Anyway Penalty shoot outs are about who is more fortunate and Chelsea just seemed destined to win it.

I never got why Robben is taking penalties anyway, Gomez never missed a penalty... Though TBH I'm apparently not a huge authority on that matter, because if you had asked me a couple weeks ago, I would've said that Piggy and Kroos should take Bayerns penalties, and now Kroos and Piggy both missed important penalties, lol.

The point just is, that I don't know what#s supposed to make Robben a great penalty taker. He never seemed like he dealt that well with pressure to me, and while he has great shooting technique, much of his goal threat comes from his brilliant runs, dribblings, and first touch. In a dead-ball situation I would take Piggy over him.

I know, I know, ironic now that Piggy missed, this is purely me not knowing why Robben takes penalties in the first place.

Now, after the season, it probably should've been Gomez, converted 6 in a row this season.

On the other hand, you can score 12 penalties in a row and still miss the 13th. Ask CRonaldo. ^^

Edit: Internationally, I think Bayern lost domestic shootouts before, and Germany did lose shootouts in the Euros in the olden days, but Germany never at the WC, and Bayern never internationally.

Viva's thoughts mirror mine on Robben. I was personally surprised that Schweinsteiger didn't take the penalty in extra time, however he went to the other end of the pitch to stand by Neuer and couldn't watch, so there must be something said for Robben at least in his willingness to take it, even if I still would have asked Kroos or Piggy to take it.
