Welcome to United. I am sure he will be a great signing for us.

Re: Ashley Young Thread
Ashley Young stats.
Of his 79 league assists, 32 have come from set pieces. Having picked up 11 from dead ball situations in 07/08, this has dropped to 4 this term.
His goalscoring is an even spread in terms of timings and home and away fixtures. 16 of his 31 league goals have come at Villa Park, while 17 of the 31 have come in the second half of matches.
In reaching 50 assists, Young became the 5th fastest player to do so in the Premier League (103 matches). He is behind Nani (85), Cantona (96), Arteta (99) and fellow Villan Robert Pires (101).
In reaching the same landmark, Young became the 9th youngest player to do so at aged 23 years and 299 days. The top 5 in this list are Fabregas, Rooney, Beckham, Ronaldo, Giggs. James Milner is 10th.
Young is 7th in the list of current Premier League players with assists from set pieces (32).
With an assist rate per game in the Premier League of 0.46 he is 5th in the all time rankings behind only David Beckham (0.57), Thierry Henry (0.56), Cesc Fabregas (0.55) and Eric Cantona (0.51)
Young has won the most penalties in the league this season, and as Alan Pardew was keen to point out, is the competitions most fouled player.

He's a quality winger. Valencia, Nani, Young, we have the best wingers in the league.

I expect a prolific season for Man United. Young's assist rate is simply stunning and together with Chicharito, they'll be a fearsome combination.

Re: Ashley Young Thread
I think it is a given for Young to start on the left as I think that Sir Alex will be reluctant to shift away from his traditional 4-4-2 (at least in the early parts of the season). I personally think that Nani should play on the right where he is at his best, and Valencia should be a substitute and occasional starter. That being said, Nani would be a better impact player. What do you guys think? Valencia for me, is best when their is an aerial presence in the box and he doesn't carry the goal threat nor dribble as well as Nani.

Re: Ashley Young Thread
the thing is nani is so greedy, he tries to beat players all the time and ends up losing the ball and allowing the other team to break. he always misses the perfect oppourtunity to pass the ball too. i would start with valencia on the right and young on the left. imagine how many goals chicha will be getting next year from the service of young and valencia.

Re: Ashley Young Thread
though really i am surprised by ferguson's decision to get ashley young since utd have some really good wingers!!. even to get him as cover is fine but he is too good a player to be on the bench, so i dont know wats gonna happen.

Manchester United do not have a genuine left sided player besides Giggs. And no offence to the greatest ever Premier League player, but he has lost the pace, athleticism and stamina to truly dominate the left side of the pitch throughout the whole season.
When Nani is played on the left, he tends to try and cut inside to much depriving United with width and also robbing space for Rooney and our (hopefully) future creative central midfield superstar. Valencia being a right foot dominant player would also not fit the left wing role making Young a great signing for united.

Re: Ashley Young Thread
so basically if united were to play a pure winger based 4-4-2 then valencia and young get the nod before nani. And i hear a little bit of transfer speculation linking nani with a move, i hope not.
Even though this might be a good signing , i thought united absolutely need a creative CM/CAM. i really thought united should have signed vdv last year wen he left us. Oh well, the rest of the transfer season should be interesting.

Re: Ashley Young Thread
I thought he was underwhelming in the last 2 friendlies..and hasn't adapted as quickly as Jones and De Gea has...that's the impression I got.
At the same time, when you see the quality of Nani compared, it really does stand out.
I have no doubt Young will come good because it's still early days ofcourse. One thing he has given us is brilliant CK, set pieces etc.

Ummm really? Nani has had the most assists last season, we need players to beat players, thats how u spark up a game, why do u think messi is so good? U have to try to succedd at anything.
As to the young thing, personally hes average and not better than nani or valencia, we will probably rotate so i dont think we'l have a big problem

Re: Ashley Young Thread
yea really. he may have been our player with the most assists but if he wasnt so greedy he could have doubled that tally. there is a reason why sir alex left him out of the biggest game of the season.

And he made a huge mistake in doing so...that friendly just a pinacle of what he could have provided....

I think he was left out because of his defensive capabilities, he was not only benched for Valencia but Park also which proves that.

Re: Ashley Young Thread
Good signing by United but the simple fact is Valencia and Nani are miles better then him as Young does not possess the work-rate needed for United (that can change) and needs to be far more consistent to be guaranteed a spot.

Re: Ashley Young Thread
The biggest advantage that Ashley Young provides is that he is a natural left footer and thus can give the United attack an extra dimension. His creativity is also an asset however he has, as of now, not shown how he will exactly fit into the squad.
I hope that if he is played on the left and Nani on the right; he will beat his man off the dribble and cut both inside and outside adding aspects to our game that valencia does not. However Valencia's ability to feed the forwards will ensure there is constant competition for places on the flanks.

Re: Ashley Young Thread
Bump.
I was skeptical of the move earlier on, because of the reduced playing time Nani and Valencia were inevitably going to get.
But his performances have been nothing short of immense.

Correct me if I am wrong but isn't Ashley a righty ? You do not score the kind of goals he scored against Arsenal being a lefty, and he kicks the penalty with his right foot too.
With Nani having a fierce left foot despite being a righty, we have 2 wingers capable of cutting inside and unleashing a thunderbolt. It's like having 2 Robben ahaha.

those two goals he scored against arsenal reminded me of playing fifa, regularly score those goals with the finesse shot.

Right now, I'd rather have either Valencia or Park instead of him. He really needs to pick it up. He hasn't been effective since the LFC away game.

He was just frustrating to watch. He had countless chances he fluffed and all his corners and crossing were all over the place. He just seems to be trying to hard. I can't knock his effort yesterday because he looked like he was trying really hard, but everything he was doing seemed off.
He is just struggling for form atm.
