HD PVR? Empty HD PVR?

This is kind of a noob question but I have no idea where to even look. But I am looking for some kind of PVR where can I record from my TV straight to my laptop. I have a MacBook so I don't know if that matters. Does anyone have any suggestions on what I should look for, or if there is a specific model better than the rest. Don't want to pay too much but I am open to any kind of suggestions.

I dont have one but I hear a lot of video game commentators on Youtube use a HD PVR called Black Magic Pro (I think thats the correct name)
