Paolo Guerrero is mad
Hamburg have objected to an eight-game suspension imposed on their striker Paolo Guerrero for his red card in Saturday's 4-0 defeat to Stuttgart.
The German Football Association (DFB) have recommended the lengthy ban, which is not yet confirmed since the northern club are to appeal the decision, for serious violent conduct after Guerrero scythed down Stuttgart goalkeeper Sven Ulreich from behind.
Although they accepted Guerrero had been in the wrong, his club were not willing to accept that he will be unavailable until the last two games of the season.
"Of course we had expected it would come to a significant ban since it was a fully deserved sending off for Guerrero, but we feel that these games are a bit disproportionate, having read the justification," said Hamburg's president Carl-Edgar Jarchow on NDR radio.
"We are therefore appealing the decision."
The DFB will now assess Hamburg's appeal before making a final decision before the next round of Bundesliga matches at the weekend.
Guerrero has already been punished by his club after meeting with coach Thorsten Fink and director of sport Frank Arnesen on Sunday.
However, Arnesen feels Guerrero is being made an example of.
"I am very disappointed about this judgement," he is quoted by sport1.de as saying. "I am not condoning the foul, but when I compare it to other fouls, then I would never have expected such a harsh punishment."
Guerrero himself is puzzled by all the furore over his sending off.
"Their goalkeeper was able to carry on - it is not like he got injured," he is quoted as saying by the dpa agency.
"I cannot claim that I intended to play the ball, no. At that moment, I was not really considering it - I was frustrated. But such things don't just happen to me and to be quite honest, I cannot understand all the fuss."
It is not the first time that Guerrero has made headlines for the wrong reasons.
Last season he was banned for five matches for throwing a plastic beer mug at a spectator, while he has on several occasions upset the Hamburg hierarchy by returning late after trips home to Peru.
Sunday's incident has drawn widespread contempt, with the DFB's technical director Matthias Sammer telling Sky television: "He has made an inexcusable mistake."
Former Liverpool midfielder Dietmar Hamann said he "should be taken out of service", adding that it "would be right if we don't see him again this season".

Re: Paolo Guerrero is mad
He deserves the ban. He could have badly injured Sven Ulreich.

Re: Paolo Guerrero is mad
Agree with the ruling, clearly places his foot right on Ulreichs calf area when he had the ball completely away from a tackling zone..

Re: Paolo Guerrero is mad
No right to complain.
That was incredibly high in the leg, with studs and with a fair bit of force.
The goalies severity of injury is irrelevant, what he tried to do was disgusting.
He should have his ban extended for asking for an appeal.

Well, as Guerrero is a repeat offender in lack of anger management, IMO he really should get a rest till the end of the season.

Re: Paolo Guerrero is mad
Don't think he tried to do anything to be honest.Maybe some mal intent....runing at full speed towards the corner flag certainly didn't help his tackle aesthetically.
High legs are common...I'd say 3 match ban would be fair.

Re: Paolo Guerrero is mad
Well, Guerrero angrily threw a water bottle at a fan two or three years ago and already got a 5 match ban then. To see him jump into the goalie from behind without any chance to get the ball is showing just as much lack of restraint and common sense and thus he needs some further punishment IMO.

Re: Paolo Guerrero is mad
No way.
He didnt try and play the ball, it was more assult than tackle.
3 matches if his foot was high but he was going for the ball..but not when your intentionally going for man.

Re: Paolo Guerrero is mad
TBF if he didn't foul him he would've won a corner.Find it hard to root against a guy with all that hustle, boy just sprinted across the pitch trying to win an impossible ball.
Maybe some mal intent there though....probably 5 match ban worthy.
Edit : Not trying to win the ball.

No way, he had no intention of trying to win the ball. He says so himself.
How do you expect to win the ball rolling along the floor if your feet are knee height?

Re: Paolo Guerrero is mad
I'm jussayin happens all the time.People are going crazy because he had so much momentum running across the pitch.
De Jong was worse nothing happened to him( different boards TBF).
Just think a 8 match suspension is a severe punishment which should be reserved for instances where people are clearly trying injure another.I don't see that here.Couldn't you see yourself doing the same just lunging in because you already ran the entire way anyway?
Of course I dunno the guy so whatever.

Re: Paolo Guerrero is mad
it really doesnt..its probably the worst "tackle" I seen all season, perhaps longer. It really doesnt happen all the time.
De Jongs? Against Alonso? Another one which should of earnt a very long suspension.
He did try and injure him..what else was he trying to do?
No, if I had any interest in the ball, my tackle would of been of the "hooking" kind, where my leg tries to go around one side and swings back. My stud wouldnt be knee height thats for sure.

If there was any time to say this, it's now...
Guerrero: I looked into the eyes of the referee and he knew he had ill intentions.

A seriously run league. Props to Bundesliga.
Poor man's Pepe though. If La Liga was run the same, he would (and other Madrid players) still be suspended.

Re: Paolo Guerrero is mad
8 games!? Lol. The keeper wasn't even hurt that much, just a few stud marks. I'm not saying it's not a red but an 8 game ban is ridiculous. The game is going soft.

Re: Paolo Guerrero is mad
In Germany it is currently considered to give a straight red for intentional elbow checks to the head/face, too, as there were a lot of very bad face injuries (broken jaws and other facial bones) recently. As the game gets faster, it is imo important to punish those that are only out to injure other players, and Guerrero never went for the ball, only for the player.aford92 wrote:8 games!? Lol. Re: Paolo Guerrero is mad
The goalkeeper clearly dived.
But wow, Paolo was clearly out to hurt somebody at 3-0 down with all of that running.
That's the type of crazy stuff you see on FIFA when a guy is 7-0 down.

What if he was? There was an intention he wanted to hit him and he's done that.

I'm not trying to defend the player, clearly a red card. I just think that 3 games is enough, IMO the only time extra games should be added are if the tackle caused serious injury, which clearly this one didn't.
As an example, when Eduardo got his leg broken in a tackle by Martin Taylor, Taylor was banned for 3 games only. Now you cannot tell me that Guerrero's tackle was worthy of almost 3x the punishment that Taylor's was.
