Acer vs Dell Laptops

Guys I need your opinion on choosing a laptop

I'm planning to go abroad for studies for around 3 years so I'm going to buy a laptop for assignments and entertainment. I'm not looking for a high end expensive one, just something decent for less than $1000 with an i5 processor. I'll be buying a PS3 for my gaming needs so the latest graphics card isn't needed.

I did some searching and Acer's Timeline and Dell's Vostro got me interested but I'm having a hard time deciding between both of them. I love the keyboard on Dell, its soft and the arrow keys are large enough for my fingers. I find it hard to use those keys on Acer's one. But what makes Acer interesting for me, embarrassingly, is that it has scroll keys on the mouse pad. Funny but I don't really like the idea of using an external mouse too often, although I would take one along.

What would you prefer and why? If you have any other brands or models I'll be interested to hear them. Thanks in advance

I doubt Acer is any better though. Probably worse.

i get a dell and hp almost every other day for repairs.

I'm into gaming but the gaming I'd do on my laptop would be some Counter Strike or Command&Conquer type of simple games that don't require much graphics. I'll be using it to make assignments, browse the net a lot, watch movies

I use my PS3 for gaming always.

From your previous post I get that Dell isn't such a good option? Guess I'll have to adjust to the Acer Keyboard then

I've got another question. How bad/good is Intel HD Graphics 3000? Would it suffice for some average gaming and usage?

Yes it would but it wouldn't be able to handle most high-end games...laptops in my opinion aren't good for gaming at all even the ones made for gaming specifically.

dont get either brand. go with lenovo, asus, toshiba, samsung, or sony. i rate lenovo the highest out of those personally btw.

i dont intend to use a laptop after i return from studies

you probably gets ultrabooks for under $1000..... they are the next gen of laptop.... copies of mac book .....slim and can run a decent amount of games....

don't go for Dell....ugly and performance is meh....but they are reliable

HP heats up alot and get alot of defects, only hp laptop i would recommed is a ENVY....it's one of their best ones and go for around $999 or $899 for students

and how quickly do you need it.... CES is this week...and alot of companies are releasing the new gen of laptops therefore all the old ones will go down in price


btw if your a student you get $100 off for most laptops

i had an acer. its bad.

The Dell laptop will break the day after the one year warranty they give you expires, it's guaranteed. Luckily I went for the 3 year warranty and it's certainly paid for itself. Over the next 12 months I became good friends with their serviceman, he was a Sunderland fan, lovely fella

a toshiba wouldnt cost that much, no?

I had an Acer once, and it was really good during the first year I was using it, fast and all. Then one day my younger brother was walking up the stairs with it and it fell out of his arms and the screen broke. A bit fragile, but great to use.

Never had a Dell before so I can't help you there.

I have a Dell. Its an XPS though. I have been using it for more than 3 years and i have had to call the serviceman only 3 times.

Never had to send my Dell laptop in for service, what do you guys do with them?

My warranty's expired anyway :L.

I dont know about Acer, but Dell is specially meh, when this laptop im using dies, i will never again buy a Dell.

Oh, I hate Lenovo, after these stupid craptops the government gave us, with all this bloatware on it, and ...

You can't go wrong with a Toshiba. I did some research before I bought mine and they were voted as the most reliable.

Had a HP in the past, terrible experience.
It kept overheating + breaking down + randomly shut down. Had to take it for repair four times, but luckily I had a 1 year warranty on it.
Since it broke down 3 times within my 1 year warranty period, I was eligible to switch the laptop for another.

My dell is doing fine.

Overheating is a problem though.

Never had a problem with any HP product I've ever bought so I dunno where all the hate comes from in that regard.

I have an Acer netbook that I've been using constantly for the past 2 years...it's been fantastic so I'm quite an Acer notebook should fit the bill for you quite nicely. As for Dell, I'm in agreement with everyone else....absolute garbage of a manufacturer.

only problem with hp is the heat..... alot of their laptops heat up alot
