Gremio president Paulo Odone: Real Madrid have held talks over Mario Fernandes

The Brazilian club's chief reveals that the La Liga giants have enquired about the defender's availability but stresses his intent that the 21-year-old is going nowhere

Gremio president Paulo Odone has confirmed that his side were approached by Real Madrid regarding defender Mario Fernandes.

The 21-year-old has been suggested as Madrid boss Jose Mourinho's priority for the January transfer window as the Portuguese coach looks to add to his defensive options.

Earlier in the month, Gremio sporting director Paulo Pelaipe said that Madrid, as well as CSKA Moscow, had seen their offers for the defender rejected by the Brazilian club.

Odone has now confirmed Madrid's interest in Fernandes, but guaranteed that the Spanish giants never tabled any formal bid for the promising stopper.

"There were some talks with Madrid in November, but we never talked about money because we want Mario to stay," he told Marca.

"We do not want to sell him and he does not want to leave either. He is very happy here and he does not have to leave."

If we are really ready to invest 20M on a Brazilian noob, why not pay the same a sign a MUCH superior player in Isla, who actually happens to be able to play at least 4 positions, is Europe ready and tested, has WC exp, and is actually legit

The first time I saw him was in the Gremio-Internacinal Derbi.....I think they won....but i remember he scored.

Outside of that mostly Youtube clips.....and the occasional 10 minutes here and there when Gremio is on.

Oh i see, i am sure he is talented, but i think it's a bit risky to sign a player that isnt accustomed to top level football, to jump in the highest pressure cooker around and be a relevant signing for us. Then again, maybe he is some kind of prodigy in defense, but for what we are doing right now, i think we can do better.

This move would be STUPID. Not only would we be paying too much for a young unproven prospect, but we have Arbeloa there, Coentrao who could make RB his home and Carvajal! If Mou buys this Fernandes dude, who Im sure is decent, I will however lose all hope that he cares about our youth and our future.
