I just don't understand McManaman
Coming through Liverpool academy, and playing for us for 10 years making a name for himself before going to Madird....
now that he is retired, he comes out and says he is a die-heart blue and cheered for Milan during 2007 CL final and playing over 10 years for Liverpool hasn't changed the fact that as a kid he supported Everton and went back t o supporting them after leaving Liverpool
I don't understand how a player can play for a club for over a decade...more than 10 years, yet don't support them and get attachd.
boggles my mind this issue.....to the point he was made up Milan won in 2007

i dont know too many facts on this specific particular issue but just listening to his commentary / analyzations etc. you can tell he does have strong feelings for liverpool, as well as madrid.

Re: I just don't understand McManaman
Simple, it has to be that whole moving abroad debacle and Barca saga during Roy Evans' term.
The man simply should have made clear with the team whether he wanted to move abroad or not. Liverpool fans in general don't when their players try to seduce clubs from abroad but kiss the badge at the same time.(looking at you torreshenko).
If he was upfront with the fans on everything then it wouldn't have caused the split between the fans on whether we love or hate him.
So its quite obvious from the malign he received from the fans, it caused him to turn bitter over his own indecisiveness as this was even evidenced in his last 5 games where he pulled a Torreshenko.
Plus he is a toffee.

Re: I just don't understand McManaman
He was just being professioanl whilst at LFC. His heart was blue, but as long as he had the LFC shirt on, he was committed and gave his all to the team.
Now that he is no longer associated with LFC, he can express his true feelings. Shouldn't be a surprise tbh.

Its a real shame that one of my idols growing up, left on a bossman, won cl for Madrid and turns out to be a proper asshole.
I still have GOD in my memories so its all good.

Re: I just don't understand McManaman
I wouldn't lie, I would have be rather disappointed if Raul comes out and say he was always an Ateltico fan and being a Real Madrid legend didn't change that fact. I probably might cry actually.
As for Macca, he really did write in his book about his time at Real that was an Everton fan but I did not think he was that big of an Everton fan. That sucks...

Who is that? Im really wondering as well, bloody hooooot!
And Macca was my absolute first idol in watching football. I remember not watching football and one day turned on the tv in the mid 90s and saw this magician with amazingly quick feet, and his style of play was just so attractive and I started watching football and Liverpool....
I guess towards the end of his Liverpool days he wasnt very happy with the team/club, and he did very well at Real for a second or 2, but fell out of favour and probably felt unjust, and hence also didnt end up with a good feeling for them I guess.... I havent followed too much on his commentaries etc., but does not seem top class, which is a shame.... and never know how he got so high up at Birmingham? With the high ranks being the Chiense tycoon and all...

If he was a real Everton fan he wouldn't have played for Liverpool in the first place.

ZING!
but seriously though, money talks and so does prestige. the prestige(and opportunity to win trophies) of liverpool may have not enticed him to play at his favorite clubs in-city rival, but the combination of the prestige and money certainly did it.
though in the games i've seen him call, he appeared to like liverpool quite a bit. maybe it's a case of him being an everton fan but not necessarily hating liverpool...

Meh, Carra grew up an Everton fan. So was Owen, IIRC.

I'm ok.

I'm almost certain Carra mentioned it in his autobiography. There are definitely 1 or 2 more players I am forgetting about.

Re: I just don't understand McManaman
Meh, guess he was more of a proffesional than a fan boy during his stay with the clubs.
I do find his insensitivity appaling, but thats just me, because if one of my team's greatest players of a generation showed this much insensitivity
hed be kinda dead to me.

Re: I just don't understand McManaman
Moving slightly off-topic, one must realize that these guys are professional footballers. That is, they make their living off the sport. In recent years loyalty has taken a step back to the money, and I don't blame the players. That said, it isn't completely gone obviously.
Hell, my footballing idol Gerrard wanted to leave for Chelsea at one point. As a fan, I've become accustomed to it I guess. It definitely makes guys like Reina legends though, for sticking with a team through thick and thin.
