^ For me personally I enjoyed his style more.

Like Gerson before and perhaps to a lesser extent Francescoli as well as Platinii Europe after...I think we can see the roots of the modern elegance of players such as Zidane,Xavi,Iniesta, and to a lesser extent Ozil and I suppose Ganso emerge.

I think that Zico was priveliged to have guys like Junior, Carpegiani,Claudio Adão and Tita around him, contributing to his overall sucess, individually I would place him and Socrates in the same general level.

Falcao was a level below both.

Socrates has always been my favorite footballer, not only because of his supreme ability but because he was more than a footballer. He represented an era were footballers were artists, were more than the machine like players of today.

He was smart, he was dedicated he was fun, and he was just. The world gained much by this man, and we shall remember you always.

You were really always the symbol of cool for generations. Socrates who played football because he loved it and not as a money scheme, who became a doctor in both philosophy and medicine. Who refused to whore himself for FIFA's benefit, and who only profited from his own work and toil.

RIP Socrates, you sure as the sky have earned it.

thanks for the article! I had forgotten about Careca (who later became part of Napoli's ma-gi-ca).. imagine if he hadnt gotten injured and had gone to the 1982 WC..

I think if you had to pinpoint the moment where football started it's descent into the cold glossy feel that charachterizes the modern era ,you look no further than the heartbreaking image of Zico with a ripped shirt and Gentile standing there with a evil grin on his face.

I was able to watch all the 1982 matches thanks to the internet, and even though i knew brazil were going to lose to italy, i was so upset about that penalty, i kept hoping the ref would change his mind and give it to brazil.....

R.I.P Socrates. I'll never shave my beard again because of this man. Never had the honor of watching him play, but I have been able to watch some of his moments via youtube and the internet.

Football's doctor

Alexandro told me that the only man who could save Brazilian football was the former captain of the 1982 World Cup team.

One of the most highly politicised, radical footballers the world has ever produced - and certainly the one with the best name - Dr Socrates.

He was medical student who didn't take up football until his mid-20s.

He lived up to his name by famously setting up a players union at his Sao Paulo club entitled Corinthians Democracy while Brazil was still a military dictatorship.

I went to meet Socrates in a bar in his hometown of Ribero Preto.

Dr Socrates wants to democratise Brazilian football
Over a few beers he explained his philosophy of football.

"I think the national coach should be elected by plebiscite.

"We must democratise football and in doing so we can democratise Brazil. Do you know that when our national team plays well our GDP goes up?"

Socrates' ambition is to take over the Brazilian Football Confederation, currently run by a man who has been charged with several counts of corruption.

He said it wouldn't happen for some time because the confederation is a closed shop of club directors..

"What we need," he says, "is a revolution in football and for that to happen we need a major disaster in Brazilian football."

"Like what?" I ask.

"Well, if Brazil was to be kicked out of the World Cup in the first round - that might be the catalyst."

And then he raised his glass towards mine. "Here's to the revolution!" he said, and with that I found myself toasting Brazil's defeat in the World Cup with the former captain of its national team

Taking votes on who the NT coach should be?That would never work in Brazil,we are the biggest knee jerkers when it comes to losses.Besides.the NT coach is always picked based on popularity,Menezes was the third choice and since the first 2 options didnt want to coach the NT,he had to be the chosen one to build our new gen.

were not going to have a bad campaign in home soil im 100% sure,we havent lost playing over here ever since the 1950 WC final if im correct,and that team wasnt even that great.

Ive said this before,our NT shouldn't be judged yet.we dont even have a starting 11....even with this NT we would have a good campaign

Him along with Zico and Falcao are players who deserved a world cup win to their names. However that does not change the fact that they are absolute greats and didn't need to win a major trophy to be remembered by the world.

Socrates didn't win the world cup and honestly if you ask me it's the world cup's loss that he didn't.

If it was democratic...then what the people want can be truly heard......that type of passion will count for something.

But I also see your point.......I mean the Brazillian public's treatment of Zagallo stands out for me as the evidence behind your claim
