Martin Montoya
Hi guys.
Was reading we were linked with him (we have been linked to all of La Masia leftovers since AVB came lol) and noticed his contract expired in the summer. Heard he isn't willing to extend because of lack of first team action?
Anyways from what I have read he is a fast right back who has excellent crossing and free kick abilities. Also heard he also has good stamina, but he's not really that strong in the air. He fills our need for a Cole-like right back perfectly (since Bosingwa sadly cannot defend), but do you think he is good enough to succeed at the highest level? Also how is he defensively?
BTW Romeu is doing great.

Re: Martin Montoya
I don't think you'll get him, he's very highly rated, has already been picked for Spain. Alves is clearly number one at fullback for now, but Montoya is his replacement waiting in the wings and he should get a promotion soon. He's capable at left back too, so its expected he'll replace Maxwell.
Romeu's done fantastically, but Montoya is a level above him. He'd easily challenge Bosingwa and I think he'd make the spot his own pretty quickly.
He's pretty much a beast all round. No, he's not a menace in the air, but you don't really need to be that good in the air at fullback...

Re: Martin Montoya
Lack of first team action? What does he expect at Chelsea? Im sure Bosingwa and Ivanovic are much better full backs than him though he could be a good second choice left back.
I reckon we play Alves too much, Montoya I reckon is quite capable of playing at right full back against the easy teams like Granada

Re: Martin Montoya
Yes he's solid defensively, never seen him struggle at least.
Paxtonpale... I'm not sure... Montoya is more the type of player AVB prefers, not Ivanovic, and I think he's only lacking experience on Bosingwa. I could see him taking Bosingwa's place quite quickly.
Just to clarify, I don't think either Bosingwa or Ivanovic are bad, I quite like them. I just think Montoya has the potential to be better than both and he's already quite mature.

Re: Martin Montoya
If we could teach a monkey to defend better than bosingwa.
Ivanovic is out of favour with AVB which is sad.
LB spot is taken but PVA and Bertrand. RB only had Clifford and a 16 year old.
He would take our RB spot almost straight away and keep it for a long time.

Re: Martin Montoya
He would be better off going to Valencia, Villareal or someone for a few years with a buyback clause.

Re: Martin Montoya
Montoya is staying i'm sure ... i expect him to replace Maxwell next season!
He is great getting foward, gd defensively.. just lack experience ( which is normal he's still 20).. hopefully Guardiola will give him the chance to play in Copa matches this season..
anyway, i expect 3 La Masia players to get promoted next season,
- Sergi Roberto (for Kieta)
- Montoya (for Maxwell)
& offcourse Cuenca!
We will have to buy a Gk & maybe a CB.
- Is Bartra ready for 1st team? i prefer if we send him on loan to gain some experience..
-GK: It seems that Guardiola not counting on Mino, its very possible we're going to buy Andrada?

Re: Martin Montoya
Maxwell might be going AC Milan as soon as Jan, perhaps this will open up a little space for Montoya.

Re: Martin Montoya
Im sure with all the deals with have had with Milan in the past four years, Im sure were not going to sell Maxwell to them. It would be interesting because if you think about it Maxwell and Ibrahimovic have played for Inter, Barca and Milan (if Maxwell joins). There almost brothers. Im sure he will stay if Pep wants him to play in the first team. It will be good to have him in the team, the more youth we get, the less we have to buy. hope we can get Barta or Muniesa in the first team regularly as well next season (particularly in Pre season).

Actually they've even played together since Ajax. Their really early days where they made their reps.

Re: Martin Montoya
I personally don't buy the Maxwell to Milan stories, at least not in January. Our back-ups are Italian - and one of them is homegrown - and he doesn't deserve a starting spot in our eleven, so from a political and sporting front, I don't see any reason for the deal.
We have a policy now of only offering one year contracts to players aged 30 and over and Maxwell has entered that age bracket. He'd have to be a buy for depth given such a contract situation, however we don't have any concerns in the area given that Bonera is still heavily used in our rotation at the moment.
With such a small squad, I really don't see why Barcelona would be interested in offloading an experienced player who is fairly versatile and doesn't make a fuss on the bench in January.

Re: Martin Montoya
Yeah I highly doubt we will, Pep's said before he admires Maxwell because of his attitude. He's content just to be in the team.
Who is Milan's current best left back? Taiwo?

Re: Martin Montoya
Taiwo, though he's still learning the language so both Zambrotta and Antonini have had time at left back in the league. Taiwo is our most used left back in Europe however.
Until he's fully settled in I can't really judge whether he's deserving of establishing himself as our number one left back for the next few years or whether he's simply the best option we have. I personally wanted Criscito, however we naturally went for the player who was free. Hopefully Didac Vila continues to improve so that he can return next summer.
