MARCA released an interesting review of our first la liga game earlier this week, highlighting some key aspects the team got better at, so i thought i would share it for those who didnt read.

7 differences between Madrid last season and this one.

1. Más Velocidad [Faster].
2. Más presión con las líneas más adelantadas [More pressure with higher lines].
The new Madrid play the line of defense 20 meters higher than last season, very close the the median line. Hence more players commit to pressuring the opposition in their area of the pitch, which allow the team to win the ball back faster, in areas where we have our most dangerous attacking players and it avoids moving the ball too much before getting to the opposition goal.

3. Más posesión [More possession].

4. Más ocasiones [More chances].
The three previous factors -pressure, speed and possession- lead to higher number of chances created. Last Sunsay we realized 39 attempts at the opposition goal, at a rate of a chance every 2.13 min), 20 more times than the average last season (19 chances a game).

5. Más intensidad [More intensity].
Other key of the victory at La Romerada. While Zaragoza was playing at 3rd gear, Madrid was in 6th gear. "They were flying like planes" commented a zaragoza player at the end of the game.

6. Se asocia más [More links up].
7. Y sobre todo, mucho más equipo [And according to all, much better collective].
All the compliments the new Madrid is receiving can be summed up in one word, - and no it's not "we will lose Mourinho no matter what"- but, T-e-a-m. All the Real Madrid players are aware that the collective is above the individual, and to achieve great things, they have to put the individual talent at service of the group. As cristiano said "We have to be united or we wont win anything".

We started pushing this style of play in the latter part of the last season, as illustrate by the destruction of Villarreal or Sevilla, when even Kaka was defending. Things can only get better, players sharper in front of the goal, better at winning possession back and at keeping it. We are on a good path.

I hope we can keep this up for most of the season but that is a big ask. Thankfully we have a big squad to combat this.

sahin please come!!! i feel that a big part of our success is going to rely on what sahin does in big games.. we will be even better...

Moving the ball a lot more and retaining possession as well is going to help us that way, conserving energy. End to end games are nice and all, but they are dangerous and playing waste plenty of energy running back and forth.

The concept of the article was to present the things that improved from last season.

"more, more, more", saying that the collective is improved isnt "wrong"

Since last season Mou has started giving Xabi Alonso more freedom to build up our attacking moves from the back. it works best for Madrid and it's quite joyful to watch him doing it from start to the end of the match. but i'm worried for times when we don't have him. perhaps Mou knew this and bought Sahin for that reason but when Sahin will be available is the question. his injury is not the problem tho, what i fear the most is that he might turns into another Kaka for us after recovering. i hope it doesn't happen

This "CR7 is selfish" thing is getting old IMO.

He's our best player he is naturally going to see more of the ball than the rest of the team and it not like he isn't trying to pass and link up.

You just think he's selfish because he is usually on the end of things.

Ronaldo looks great and unselfish against teams like Zaragoza, but it's basically a guarantee that every time he faces Barcelona, the inner Gareth Bale inside him emerges. (Except he manages to dribble past his man about 3% of the time)

When playing barcelona, CR put himself ( unintentionally maybe) in a special competition with Messi, and we have seen that the best Clasico he had was the Supercopa first leg in the Bernabeu when he played for the team (and not trying to delete his man each time he hold the ball).

Meanwhile, CR has a killer instinct, a great striker skill and can pull 3 players around him and create spaces for his team mates. You can see his movements on the pitch and his call for the ball, just amazing.

CR has to throw back all the pression on him in the big games and not try to show that he is here, and i think Mou has already teached him that.

The eight improvement from Madrid should be firing the medical staff and get a proper replacement..

It happened again, the way we are meant to play, a preview of the final product of our game

Key word is the pressing we applied when attacking, as soon as we would lose the ball, we would from two high lines of pressing to choke the ball carrier and take the ball back.

Basically, in attack, the pressing lines were something like this:

ronaldo--------------Di Maria
-----------Kaka--------------
Marcelo--Alonso----Khedira
Ramos--Pepe-----godbeloa

that's how we where pressing, left or right, 3 lines of forward, and Marcelo was doing a significant effort to create a 2 line with Alonso and Khedira, with Kaka floating in the middle.

I saw some of it against Ajax, against Lyon it was significant, and against Malaga in the first half, it was incredible.

I think it's a snippet of a final product, something we are working to achieve, but is still incomplete at the moment. The tactical work mourinho is doing in training is to maintain and master the shapes and lines of pressing it seems.

He isnt working on the passing, but the pressing, letting creative freedom to the forwards to mingle and create.

hope that even though it isnt complete its good enough at its best of its run to mount an opposition against any challenge. great thread nick
