Santos want Brazil legend Pele to play in Club World Cup

Brazil legend Pele could be back playing for Santos at the Club World Cup as the club's marketing executive Armeio Neto refused to rule out a playing role for the 70-year-old.

Folha de Sao Paulo reports the club's ambition would be to see the former striker return to action in a potential final against Spanish giants Barcelona.

Neto believes having Lionel Messi and Pele on the same pitch as opponents would generate great financial interest in the event to be held in Japan but suggests the decision rests with coach Muricy Ramalho.

"I don't doubt anything," Neto said.

"It also depends on the coach. If Pele is a boost to the team then why not?"

Santos president Luis Alvaro Ribeiro has also claimed that coach Ramalho will make the final call.

"We still need to see what happens with the coach as it's his decision," said Ribeiro.

"Of course, even though Pele trains, he would not be able to play for a long time, but one can imagine him coming on at the end of the game to take a penalty."

lol, I am against it, but Santos really are into marketing our club lately, because they want the Peixe back onto the top of the world like we used to be in the 50's and 60's-, we want people to know who we are, how we're winning, how we're playing. You know, publicity.

so I wouldn't be surprised if in the end he gets 5 minutes of game. Also, him being on the pitch would make the Japanese audience sympathize with us, cheer for us, because you know what? Barcelona will be probably playing at "home", with all the fans there crazy about the superstars they hear about, while Santos only have Neymar, and perhaps Ganso and Elano.

But really, what can a 70 year old do? I am sure he still got class, but he hasn't got the body, the form. Again, I'm against it. His time is over, 40 years ago.

Well I figure they would only let him in if Santos are winning and in the last 5 minutes. Imagine the amount of lulz if he scores. Also I thought the CWC was no longer held in Japan?

unfortunately its in japan again.. going to have to wake up early. i wasnt so crazy about it being in the middle east, but if it was, there was a slight chance i mightve saved up so many to go there and watch it... japan is waaaaaaaaaaay more expensive.. the plane ticket anyway,.

A stupid idea, he won't be able to touch the ball unless in Santos' own area or the opponents simply quit playing and let him. Just imagine a 70-year-old, any 70-yo, in a competitive match on the football pitch, that'd be utterly humiliating.

He doesn't look 70.

That would be awesome, but knowing Maradona he would cruelly tackle Pele and have him off to the hospital. Better not.

except that maradona has nothing to do with barcelona, really. he played there a couple of years if not less, and wasn't at his best, despite some good performances. if he was to come back like that for any team, it should be napoli.

Maradona played in barcelona for barely two seasons, being injured for most of the time in his first.

Barca should get Romario, Maradona, Ronaldo, and Rivaldo vs Santos and Pele

I love how all of you are assuming the final will be Santos - Barcelona.

They still have to get to the final.
