Reading now in Sport.es that Barcelona appeals to the fact that the clause expires by a certain date every season. Now with Covid delays to the season it's up to the lawyers and courts to interpret the contract in whatever way makes sense.

IF this is true, I imagine is an issue of: fixed calendar date vs interpreting the date as "end of the season".

Well given that the transfer market lasts all the way until October this year, Messi's lawyers could have a point.

Khaldoon Mubarak said the other day how City will be targeting experienced players rather than those aged from 20-25 like they usually do. He very well could be referring to a Messi signing.

Messi wants to compete and win the CL one last time before he retires. He'll probably join up with Pep at City for one last dance. I'm sure he'll do the business in the PL. If someone like Silva went down as one of the best midfielders ever there and he's a poor man's version without the pace or scoring, I'm sure Messi will be fine in Pep's system.

Another option is PSG if he doesn't want to risk going to the PL. It'll be an easier ride. He'll cruise to league titles while playing in Paris and he'll only have to turn up for the CL. He can join his buddies there too.

Either way, if they go to court against Messi, it will be unbelievably shameful to disrepsect the best player ever and a legend of the club in that way

Wow... he's forcing a move.  His lawyers told Barca that the "end of the season" moved and his original notice date was meant to coincide post the CL final. He argues that he maintains the right to revoke his contract unilaterally given the CL final just ended. The fax official served as Messi invoking this clause.

ESPN pundits aren't lawyers. He can invoke the current circumstances and the intent of the June 10 date. Since Barca weren't eliminated until about 10 days ago, he waited until the end of the season.

It's not cut and dry at all.

The biggest thing is that it's a free transfer. He communicated to Barca that he's revoking his contract!
