After a quick google, Messi is number 7, Jordan in 1st place, CR in second.

Only the Soviet Union article is the one claiming Messi is number 1.

Though after a quick review, the SSSR article says in the USA, I googled the world, makes sense Messi is popular there since he plays in the USA, so Harmonica's article may be legit.

But still it shows how Harmonica always uses a particular sample to suit his narrative, rather than the entire picture.

I was interpreting that messi is the most popular athlete amongst the USA population. Including the world view and now that messi is in the USA, this makes sense.
