2018/2019 Premier League Discussion Part III - Page 3 Empty Re: 2018/2019 Premier League Discussion Part III

Post by futbol Wed Apr 24, 2019 12:26 pm

Man United's problem is that they are not as big as they think they are. They view themselves as the biggest club in the world. Their fans, judging by Redcafe, are actually obsessed with this idea.

They are only competitive from a commercial viewpoint though and that's mostly down to being a Premier League club.

In any other area but commercial deals, they can't compete at all. They can't get near the "obvious" top talents like Neymar, Mbappe, De Ligt etc. So when that's out of the window they can only do 2 things: Scout very well or promote talent from within. The latter is almost exclusively down to luck. How many times do top teams promote even 1 world class player from within, let alone 2 or more at the same time to build a team around? Very very rarely.

So what's left is scouting well. And that's something United seem to be horrible at. Do they even have scouting at all? In recent years they just went for past it big names like Ibra, Di Maria, Sanchez, Schweinsteiger, Falcao etc.

And then there is the problem that players who become too good won't stay with them and want to make a step up. Which brings us back to the initial point: Not as big as they think they are.

I don't see them back on the top for a long time. They literally have 9 starting players who are mediocre + Pogba + De Gea who want both out + a rookie manager whose experience is managing Cardiff during relegation and some Danish club.

Mourinho was right when he said finishing 2nd with United was one of his biggest achievements.

Well, no. This is the most successful club in England. Suggesting that finishing 2nd with them is somehow great is ridiculous. Besides Mourinho had already been there for two summer transfer windows by then, bringing in talent like Lindelöf and Bailly. He had the money to make United great again, but signed poor or has-been players.

Money is what makes clubs big and United have got lots of money. Once they get someone competent to sign players for them, they will be challenging for titles again.

2018/2019 Premier League Discussion Part III - Page 3 Empty Re: 2018/2019 Premier League Discussion Part III

Post by Glory Wed Apr 24, 2019 6:13 pm

THIS IS AN OPEN LETTER FOR THE MANCHESTER UNITED BOARD MEMBERS, PLAYERS & FANS

On 14th May 1995, Blackburn Rovers under the leadership of Kenny Dalglish arrived at Anfield on the last day of the 1994/95 season with a two point lead over Manchester United on 89 points but with a worse goal difference, which meant that if United, on 87 points, won at Upton Park versus West Ham United, and Blackburn failed to win at Anfield then Manchester United would be crowned Champions of England.

This left many Liverpool fans with a predicament, if they supported the Reds and roared them on to victory and United won at West Ham it could mean handing the title to arch rivals Man United.

So what happened on the day???

Liverpool & their fans, despite knowing victory could mean handing the title to United, duly went out and beat Blackburn 2-1 at Anfield with a late goal from Jamie Redknapp, and what was surprising when you consider the heated rivalry between Manchester United & Liverpool is that the crowd at Anfield that day roared the Reds on to victory despite knowing the consequences.

As it happened, Manchester United could only manage a 1-1 draw at Upton Park & Blackburn Rovers were duly crowned 1994/95 Premier League champions.

Despite our sometimes heated rivalry, I & many Liverpool supporters have the utmost respect for Manchester United.

Both our clubs have had our fair share of tragedy as well as glory. Manchester United suffering the terrible Munich air disaster back in 1958 which wiped out many players from the legendary "Busby Babes" including the one & only Duncan Edwards.
Liverpool suffering the loss of 96 supporters in the tragedy at Hillsborough in 1989 which still has repercussions to this day with the families of the bereaved still fighting for justice 30 years later.

Both clubs are the most successful English teams in the history of English football, Manchester United crowned 20 times English champions, Liverpool standing on 18 titles in their 127 year history. Liverpool - five times European Champions, Manchester United winning Europe's top prize three times.

Both clubs have achieved success through countless years of hard work, graft, top management & brilliant boardroom decisions which have brought three famous Scotsmen to their respective clubs, Liverpool appointing the legendary Bill Shankly in December 1959, and United appointing Matt Busby in 1945 and then later approaching Aberdeen in November 1986 to take Alex Ferguson to Old Trafford.........the rest as they say is history.

Neither Liverpool Football Club nor Manchester United had the benefit of rich billionaire benefactors pumping millions & millions of oil money in to the club which has seen Manchester City, who up to that time were barely known outside the UK, attracting many of the worlds mercenary footballers to the Etihad to ply their trade.

Both Manchester United & Liverpool FC have millions of fans throughout the world, this worldwide support has been achieved through decades of countless successes achieved both at home & abroad and has NOT been bought by a billionaire benefactor.

Both clubs are admired & respected throughout the world for their many past glories both at home & abroad, with both clubs having hundreds fan clubs throughout the world on all five continents, something which Manchester City despite their recent success will NEVER achieve.

My message to all Manchester United fans, players & boardroom members is a simple one......please remember what Liverpool fans & players did for you in 1995 and go forward and roar your team to a famous Manchester Derby victory versus City because whatever you think of Liverpool Football Club, we really are closer than you think.

Ridiculous statement. If money made clubs big, Spurs would be bigger than Milan. Viewing rates and shirt sales in Indonesia or the US don't make a club big.

United have lots of money which they keep spending on dross because no elite talent goes there and the few far and between who go there don't end up staying there.

No, I want to beat City. Don't see it unless they're very off tonight, we're on point and even then it'll be an ugly win.

Ain't nobody got time for EL

inb4 we beat City, you win the title and we still end up in the EL

Ole going all out to ensure City win. He could have fielded our best 11 and still achieved that though.

You really think those were Mourinho signings? Laughing
When has Mourinho ever before brought inexperienced CBs for big money to be starters? He always goes for top experienced defenders like Lucio, Carvalho, etc. I think he wanted Alderweireld at United but didn't get him.

Woodward is in charge transfers, manager can only request which players he would like, but in the end Woodward is the one deciding. Mourinho probably got some players he wanted, but a lot of them surely weren't, most of those players just aren't Mourinho-type signings. This isn't like 10+ years ago anymore, managers don't do transfers anymore, they can only request players but in the end sports director is the one who decides.

You would think folks would get that by now. Managers don't sign players directly anymore, they just request names and the the technocrats at the club deal with the actual negotiations.
