India on Liverpool radar: Ian Ayre
KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian capital's date with three English Premier League giants in as many weeks looks too good to believe from the perspective of an Indian football follower. Arsenal's visit was followed by Liverpool FC, while Chelsea will come calling next week.
But there's good news for India, too, as Liverpool are exploring possibilities of touring the subcontinent in the coming days. "We are very much aware of market potential in India. We are not ruling out a full-fledged tour in the near future... we are actually looking for the right kind of partners in setting up an academy there," Ian Ayre, managing director of the club, told TOI on Saturday.
The Merseyside club's solitary association with India is a football training centre in Pune, which was launched by deemed university Bharati Vidyapeeth last year. "We want to be absolutely sure about our role in such projects. We are in talks with a number of partners in this regard and let's see how it comes about," Ayre said.
The club's new sponsors, Standard Chartered, is keen on getting a foothold on Indian shores to tap the vast market in the subcontinent.
