I'd argue it can't work with out two inside forwards making runs beyond Messi.

Villa and Pedro at their best were just as important to the all thing as Messi was.

He needs space, who made the space for him? Look at Ronaldo, always has a radius of 20 meters around himself. Messi needs either a 9 to make runs in front of him or two wingers/inside forwards bombing down and opening up the middle for him. Barcelona got none of this.

Messi is the centerpiece of the team. Almost all of the attack goes through him at some point. Messi being a faulty link is much more detrimental than say pedro not having a good game.
