Agreed, but that is because he was clearly the best player. In years when the winner isn't that clear, as is the case for this season, Euros or WC will matter a lot. Look back in time

Euro/WC years:

10: Messi, the exception
08: Ronaldo, Euro year, he played and did reasonably well (also clear winner though)
06: Cannavaro: WC year, won because of world cup
04: Shevchenko: Euro year, exception must admit, as he didn't play.
02: Ronaldo won world cup, Ronaldo won.
00: Figo won, Figo made it far in the Euros
98: Zidane won, Zidane won the WC

etc. etc.

As it stands right now, Messi will most likely win it. There's not much separating both players achievement-wise and goal-wise. But Ronaldo has a chance to outshine Messi, by taking Portugal far in the Euros, since Portugal arent favorites at all and that would count alot in the eyes of the people voting.

Most of the posters are teenagers or in their 20s. Not full grown men.

The winner of this year's Ballon D'Or will completely depend on the Euros, as no club has managed to completely dominate both their league and in europe. Ronaldo would've won had he won the CL, but now I think the CL is between a German and a Spaniard.

Imo, ballon d'or should be given to the player with the best Individual performance in the season... currently, Messi is the best with some distance..

Messi can win it again in 2013 Finally, after playing 3 consecutive seasons without rest.. Messi could have upto 6-8+ weeks of rest this summer, with the fact that Barcelona didn't win La Liga and UCL this season.. Messi has a lot of reasons, to improve and have the best season of his career...

Well he did score the 2 goals in normal time.... PEnaldo doesnt doeserve it though.... his goals are overrated.

Come to think of it, its Euro year and if Portugal does well and he performs in it who knows.... also have to see how Messi performs in the rest of the year to decide.....

How's it delusional? In 2010, Xavi, Messi and Sneijder all had wonderful seasons, but the award was given to Messi, but personally I would have given it to Xavi. Of course, if anything, the example I used shows that it doesn't depend on what you win, as Sneijder won the treble and was a World Cup finalist. However, people get bored of voting for the same player over and over again, for instance, in basketball, look at how Michael Jordan was treated. Everyone knew he was the best, but there were numerous occasions where he never received awards, when he should have.

No doubt that Messi is better than Ronaldo, but what some are trying to say is that since Ronaldo looks likely to win La Liga and the Golden Boot (still not over, I know), he has more of a chance than Messi, who has received abuse since the Chelsea game, where he went missing in three consecutive games, which isn't Messi at all. Plus, Ronaldo has the Euro 2012 campaign to show what he's made of, and that can play an integral part in deciding the winner. Obviously, it's either Messi or Ronaldo, with Ozil coming third, in my opinion, as the German has been phenomenal in 2012. Let me reiterate: I don't think Messi is inferior to Ronaldo...

Would it be crazy to give it to Iker if Spain wins Euro? He has been immense this season btw, has yet done a blunder that leads to a goal and has saved us on numerous occasions when our inconsistent defense has had a brainfart.

Yes, primarily because goalkeepers aren't appreciated. Or, in other words, attackers get more credit than defensive players, that's how it works. Casillas has been amazing this season, his best season in the last four seasons, but he doesn't deserve it ahead of Messi and Ronaldo, as the pair have won games on their own this season, more so than Casillas.
