If you're a real barca fan and watched every single game that season, you would understand. That team went on a ridiculous run of form and were destroying spanish teams away from home 5-0 and 4-0 consistently. Never seen such dominant away performances in my life.

The messi-villa partnership flourished early in the season, then leveled out a bit.
but for the CL final they were ripping sh*t up and the team peaked at the perfect time of the season.

With Messi-Villa-Pedro, the gameplan was absolutely clear.
Villa and Pedro make runs to stretch the defense, while acting as inside forwards. Messi is such a versatile player that he could drop into midfield and the wingers cut inside easily but barca keeps a numerical advantage in midfield. The high workrates of Villa/Pedro combined with barca's possession 70% possession, they would unbalance defenses easily. The amazing part is, both Villa and Pedro performed the "winger" role for barca but were also clinical in finishing when need be. MVP was a tremendous partnership, so was the system.

Barca 2012 is a completely different story, and barca 2009 relied more on sheer individual brilliance.
As a team, barca 2011 is superior. On paper 2009 is better. The sum of all the parts - Henry, Eto'o, Yaya Toure, Marquez, Bojan, etc...

Another question....how do you guys think the 05-06 CL winning Barca side with Ronaldinho in his prime compare to these Barca sides?

I found 2009 the most entertaining

And they had Thierry Henry, Eto'o and Messi in the frontline. You can't compete with that. And it showed.

What somebody explained before as to the tactical approach to playing Barca has changed vastly between 2009 and now.

2009 depended less on possession, were slightly more direct etc. because they could do that. Straight after the treble year teams adapted to playing us. Pep's reaction? Starve them even more of the ball and try to dominate the game even more. This is actually quite brilliant, but neutrals prefer the days of Ronnie and Eto'o etc. where we played more open etc. This is simply because we had the space to do this because teams attacked. This simply doesn't happen anymore. Every season we have to learn to dominate the ball even more and so people say its even more boring. Well... its either play this 'boring' way, or lose more... Considering the people that matter, Barca fans, don't actually find it boring, then nobody gives a rat's ass what anybody else thinks. We win, we entertain our fans... win, win, win.

This year for me doesn't compare. This is the Messi season, the team hasn't been great. If it wasn't for Messi, we wouldn't even kiss the feet of the 08/09 or 10/11 teams. The idea that 08/09 was better than 10/11 is ridiculous though. The move to put Messi in the middle was tactical genius. His stats alone can show you he improved hugely as a player. However, the positional move also showed so many new edges to his game. Out on the right in 08/09 he was about half the player he is now. Further, when Villa and Pedro were on song, they fulfilled their roles perfectly. When we were in form, it was like clockwork... jizz-football as I say. Whether you say they were as good as Eto'o and Henry individually doesn't matter, because the other player with them, Messi, was twice as good as before. The combination was immense.

Don't leave it there though. The midfield improved, the trio of Xavi-Iniesta-Busquets had matured into the most dominant midfield of all-time. The defence had improved, Abidal had gone from the weakness of the team to its inspiration. Puyol in 08/09 struggled for games. He regained form through 09/10 and despite injury was immense again when needed. Overall, the team of 08/09 still looked vulnerable at times in defence. That old Barca curse. Last year, at our best... we were a wall.

Then there's Valdes. He's gone from strength to strength under Pep. From a clown to being finally respected worldwide.

5-0 and 3-1 UCL final. Thats all the evidence you need. Jizz-football

I really don't see how you can say that. The 2009 team was the more successful team and beat a way better team on the way to winning there CL. Plus individually they had better players. I think it's funny how Kizz said at there peak there were playing "jizz" football but then you just ignore there dip in form that season.

When your comparing two great great teams you can't just ignore the dips in form.

And no Messi wasn't twice the player in 2011 then 2009. In 2009 he had 38 goals and 18 assists with another 30 plus goal scorer on the team. And Henry on the other wing putting in 26 goals and 12 assists.

That is balance and I will take it all day over what Villa did for us although I love him he was wildly inconsistent in 2011 scoring 23 goals in 53 games while Henry had his 26 goals and 12 assists in 42 games. That's a big difference.

Again I just don't know how someone could say the team who was less successful with less pure talent would kill the other team.

The best is 2012 ,it's the most spectacular.

Not sure which was the best but for my money, I enjoyed 2009 the most.

Impossible to compare with the team from today as everyone was taken by surprise by that team. Hardly anyone parked the bus. Still though, the memories were a lot sweeter for me.

Back then, you shut down Messi and you still have the other 2 to really worry about. Not as true nowadays. Disagree all you like, but there is a reason Messi has 60+ goals this year. Puzzling to me why he isn't more heavily marked with this team. It's literally a 1 man offense.

Besides the season hasn't ended yet ,i think another triplete .2012 is superb with the addition of Cesc and Sanchez .

Pique, Iniesta, and Messi are better now. But in 2009, Xavi was in his prime, same as Puyol, Abidal was better, Yaya better than Biscuits, Eto'o better than Villa, Henry better than Sanchez.

Barça 2011.

The 2011 team was better imo.Teams still hadnt discovered the park the bus tactic which was first used by Hiddink and it was alot easier for us to play.Since 2010 Almost all the teams that are hugely inferior to us park the bus and it becomes alot harder like that.I believe this squad could be better than the previous ones if we could buy decent wingers.Villa and Affelay are on the verge of being ready to play again and could be 100% fit by the new season.We also need Pedro to return to last year's form and I think the team would be better than 2011's.

Ronaldinho shined brighter than everyone (yes, even Messi), although it was only for a brief moment.

2009 for its pure entertainment.
Almost everyone in the team scored.
Watching Dani Alves at his peak was sheer fun. He had an amazing partnership with messi.
Pique and puyol were better. There were no shakira or Ibra.
Henry-etoo-messi made me unzip my pants.
There were no deception in that glorious year.
