Wicked and cruel killers
KINGSTON - The jury’s first-degree-murder verdict Sunday — which came after less than 16 hours of deliberating — made its own statement of the odious act of honour murder.
Not here will beastly barbarism be tolerated.
Not of slain teen sisters Zainab, Sahar, Geeti, and step-mom Rona — and not of anybody.
“This verdict sends a very clear message about our Canadian values and the core principles in a free and democratic society that all Canadians enjoy, and even visitors to Canada enjoy,” stellar Crown counsel Gerard Laarhuis said after Sunday’s verdict.
Wicked, stupid, insulting and dishonour are some of the words to describe the cruel, June 30 2009, honour murder of their own family by monstrous Mohammad Shafia, Tooba Yahya and their son, Hamed.
Wicked because there is nothing more so than to drown your own children and fellow family member.
Stupid because who would ever think of such a ridiculous plan and think they would get away with it.
Insulting because by choosing Kingston they underestimated a city of very smart people — including Kingston Police who figured out their evil staged car-accident plan at the Rideau Canal locks within minutes.
And dishonour because what honour could there ever be in slaying your own children for wanting to be Canadian?
Smug scumbag Mohammad Shafia’s repulsive comments — calling them “filthy whores” and “prostitutes and “may the devil (defecate) on their graves” — will never be forgotten.
This was a stunning police investigation led by Kingston Police Staff-Sgt. Chris Scott and Insp. Brian Begbie, who credited the first responding constable who noticed there was a piece of plastic from a second car on the edge of the locks. He and an accident reconstruction expert knew it smelled weird.
But Scott took the focus away from the incredible investigation and instead focused on the victims.
“I just think of Rona, Zainab, Sahar and Geeti.”
So many here do and there will be a plaque erected at the murder scene at Kingston Mills in their memory.
This despicable plan to murder them to “restore” the wealthy Afghanistan businessman’s honour drew the ire of a number of people inside and outside of the Frontenac courthouse after the verdicts were read. “If looks could kill” might be the best way to describe the glare these murderers received from several revolted jury members when they were individually polled to see if they agreed with the collective verdict.
Very fair and respectful Justice Robert Maranger didn’t mince words either.
“There is nothing more honourless than the deliberate murder of, in the case of Mohammad Shafia, three of his daughters and his wife ... in the case of Tooba Yahya, three of her daughters and a stepmother to all her children, in the case of Hamed Shafia, three of sisters and a mother,” he said, eyes trained on the killers six metres in front of him.
“The apparent reason behind these cold-blooded, shameful murders was that the four completely innocent victims offended your twisted notion of honour — a notion of honour that is founded upon the domination and control of women, a sick notion of honour that has absolutely no place in any civilized society.”
But these bastards who came to Canada in 2007 still don’t get it. There was no apology to their own kin for their atrocious and abhorrent drowning for no good reason. There was no mention of their own family members’ names. Evidence showed they were tortured, spied on, beaten and threatened by these poor excuse for humans.
In fact all that came from their mouths was more shocking defiance and grotesque spin.
“We are not criminal,” Shafia said. “We are not murderers. We didn’t commit the murder and this is unjust.”
His co-killer, Tooba, hollered: “I am not a murderer, I am a mother.”
Hamed followed with “Sir, I did not drown my sisters anywhere.”
A jury here did not agree.
The devil may not defecate on these murderers since he generally takes care of his own.

Honor Killing is part of the South Asian culture....
many use Religion as a excuse for their sick mentalities....
and many of them are uneducated people.... but sometimes even the most educated people do this

I just dont get how someone would kill half of their family and think that is ok. Why come to Canada if you cant handle the Canadian culture.
This saddens me that people like him exist. I agree most of the have no education and just pure evil. I know for sure he will get a good welcoming at his jail cell once they found out what he did.
The son and the mom will get turn also.

The reason they were killed cus they had become too Canadian and Boyfriends.

The amazing part is that it happened in Canada, a place where the murderers decided to move. You would expect them to know about the cultural changes that would occur in a western country.

Re: Wicked and cruel killers
it happens all too often in india, even among prosperous families ,in fact more so if they are conservative.. women cannot marry outside their gotras which is a name given to a vedic seer's descendants.. and the couples who disobey this are often hanged by their own parents to preserve honour

Re: Wicked and cruel killers
I don't think you can argue with people who adhere to fundamentalism. They're capricious in nature and no matter how good a society they're in, they'll make sure to polarize themselves and live within their own little world of encouraged ignorance.
The only way you can battle fundamentalists is to be just as extreme in your approach to them as they are to your culture. You have to assimilate - not integrate - them into society. Impose your culture aggressively onto them, leaving little room for their own. Kind of like a totalitarian rule, I suppose ...
Canada of course just can't go down that route. They try to integrate people by allowing them to find a compromise between their own culture and Canada's. In cases like these, that's just a lost cause.

Mr. Shafia, Ms. Yahya and Hamed Shafia were convicted of murdering sisters Zainab, Sahar and Geeti Shafia, aged 19, 17 and 13, whose bodies were found in a submerged car at a Rideau Canal lock, just east of Kingston, in June, 2009.
3 innocent victims were murdered because of evil backward thinking scumbag who will get his ass raped in Jail for the rest if his life.

Re: Wicked and cruel killers
Very frakked up, but then again, people get killed for even more shittier reasons than that on a daily basis.
These guys probably have huge mental problems. Even half religious fundamentalists would be in huge doubts when it comes to killing a 13 year old, much less a family member. I mean, that sort of thing is stamped in our DNA... these guys must be dead inside.

Murder out of honor, they went out at night, had boyfriends etc. something which unacceptable for fundamental moslem parents. Instead of sorting the matter by talking or kicking them out at worst, they decided that they have the god given right to kill off half of their family...RealGunner wrote:sorry for not understand the weirdly written article lol

On topic, no words to describe my disgust for those actions... How could a parent kill their own grown up child cold heartedly? Do they qualify as people or animals?

Motive for murder
According to the Crown’s case, the murder plot was sparked when Zainab ran away to a Montreal women’s shelter in April 2009. This, the Crown alleged, was the ultimate act of betrayal. She had made the family’s problems public and she did it so she could ultimately marry an unapproved man, the boyfriend she had hidden from her parents and brother.
She was eventually coaxed back home by Yahya with the promise that the wedding could go forward.
Court heard evidence that Mohammad Shafia had called a relative of Yahya’s and proposed a plot to take Zainab to Sweden, have a picnic by the water and then drown her. Another relative testified Shafia had told him he would have killed his daughter if he had been at the marriage to her boyfriend, which was annulled the next day.

The bodies of Zainab, 19, Sahar, 17, and Geeti Shafia, 13, along with Rona Mohammad Amir, 50, were found dead in the family’s Nissan, submerged in a lock on the Rideau Canal on June 30, 2009.

Re: Wicked and cruel killers
btw most of the Pakistan and Indian's in US and Canada and Europe are from poor villages ...
during the 60-80s US gave nationalities to alot of villagers from Pakistan to come work in US....majority of them come from poor backgrounds... these peoplel don't have a clue about Pakistan or India... some people i have met think Pakistan and India are all slums and villages as portrayed by the Media and films
even after having lived aboard for so long many still have learned nothing.... i know alot of families who won't let their kids marry anyone outside their ethnicity or nationality...

Re: Wicked and cruel killers
all this eventually comes to a decision of a few brahmins one day in 500 bc to start compiling sanskrit texts codifying social behaviour..gotras, caste system intra religious rules
being a brahmin , hate this backward system.. and when others think that this is an unruly society with no rules for social conduct, filled with backward and savage people they do have some basis for such thought

Re: Wicked and cruel killers
Police asked the three to come from Montreal so they could pick up some personal items that had been in the motel rooms that could now be released back to them. Police also suggested they go look at the scene with investigators, so they could explain how they thought the car had fallen into the water.
When they got there, police told them they had found a camera at the site, so they were going to analyze it and hope it had captured the car going into the water.
What Shafia, Yahya and Hamed didn't know was that was a lie, a ruse designed to get them talking. What the Shafias also didn't know was that during their visit to Kingston that day the police had bugged their minivan so they could intercept and record their conversations.
The camera trick worked. Shafia and Yahya talked the whole way back to Montreal, apparently quite concerned that if there was a camera it would show they had been there before. Hamed was mostly silent, though he curiously warns his parents only at the end of the long conversations that police could bug their car and secretly record their conversations.
"That night, there was no electricity there," Shafia says. "It was pitch darkness. You remember, Tooba?"
"Yes," she replies.
The family was speaking their native language of Dari, but Kingston police had brought two Farsi-speaking Toronto police officers into the investigation to assist with interpreting the wiretaps. Dari and Farsi are two very closely related dialects, akin to American and British English, court heard.
Over the next few days came angry rants from Shafia, cursing his dead daughters as whores for having boyfriends, and saying, "May the devil (defecate) on their graves." He brought up his concept of honour about half a dozen times.
"Even if they hoist me up onto the gallows...nothing is more dear to me than my honour," Shafia says in one conversation.
"This is my word to you: Be I dead or alive, nothing in the world is above than your honour," he says in another.

This happens in India all the time. Even now in the hinterlands. These people care a lot when people around them talks about them. That is what they call honour and it does not actually mean how we understand honour.
