Do Keepers have to wear a helmet?
This weekend, 2 goalkeepers got headinjuries... we all know what happened to Cech!
What do you think about the idea of wearing a helmet? They are very vulnerable and have to go head first in a lot of situations!

Who's the 2nd keeper other than Stekelenburg?

PSV's Tyton. Also looked very nasty on the pitch, watched both games.

Well, ter Stegen got injured just before the match day when he collided with his coach and broke two teeth, so that makes 3 (or 4 when you count the goalkeeper's coach who even went unconscious).

Re: Do Keepers have to wear a helmet?
So what do you guys think about a GK helmet?
In Oregon and Washinton state they have laws which say that a prof sportsman has to stop his/her career when they have had 3 headinjuries... there are also 4 sportsman who killed themselve because of serious braindamage/headinjurie

Re: Do Keepers have to wear a helmet?
if keepers wore helmets the players would have to start wearing them too and soon we'd end up with an abortion of a sport like american "football"
it's occupational hazard, outfield players get their legs broken every week, you don't see them wearing body armor...

I don't think the OP meant wearing a plastic helmet, but a felt padding like the one Cech and players with head injuries wear.
Also, the position of the goal keeper being static and at the receiving end of an accelerating forwards foot is more dangerous and have had the most dangerous head injuries. Not to mention the bar which also is a source of head injuries for player.
If it were a plastic helmet then you would be right, as then the players would have to wear helmets to protect themselves from the keeper, and such.

Re: Do Keepers have to wear a helmet?
the padding wouldn't protect stekelenburg from lucio kicking him in the face either... same thing with the outfield players, no padded helmet would make drogba not get knocked the *bleep* out last week

True, but the internal effect is decreased if by 30% (a figure I remember from an old article on Cech's helmet).
While the external effect might not be noticeable in extreme cases such as Lucio's kick, the 30% internal protection might potentially save a life or career.

Re: Do Keepers have to wear a helmet?
I can imagine many goalies being annoyed by the extra weight, less vision and hearing that come with a decent helmet. It would affect their performance and many wouldn't want it. It's an acceptable risk, goalies are the players who are least injured and play the most.

Just what Lord Spencer said... you can't 'save' them all but it will save some and helmets like Cech are not dangerous for the other players.
Re: Do Keepers have to wear a helmet?
I think it's a sound enough argument, but I'll say 'no'.
Sports that include fast movement always carry at least a small risk no matter what protection you're wearing. I think it would be unnecessary for all 'keepers to wear a helmet compared to the low number of head injuries in the game.

Well, looks like they smashed their heads together somehow. I haven't seen footage, but I read it was quite an impact. The xcx wrote:hows that possible lol?rwo power wrote:Well, ter Stegen got injured just before the match day when he collided with his coach and broke two teeth, so that makes 3 (or 4 when you count the goalkeeper's coach who even went unconscious).
As for wearing some protective headgear - I remember I read somewhere that the goalies didn't want it as it impaired the vision.
