According to BILD, Xabi Alonso will take over Borussia Mönchengladbach in summer as successor of Marco Rose, who is leaving for Dortmund

I'll definitely watch some of their games under him. I wish him all the best of luck in his future as a manager.

Like Pirlo, Seedorf, Cruyff, etc
Intelligent football players tend to turn out to be dreadfully dumb managers whom overcomplicate things and write 5 different methodologies for how they want their wingers to be on the wing of their main foot
Ironically its the 'dumb' players that go out to find success like Conte, Simeone, Zidane etc

The quality of the teams they manage is very relevant, though. Zidane made his managerial debut with a Real Madrid side that was just about to hit it's peak, age-wise. He'll likely only go from strength to strength from here on out, so luck plays a great part in it. Regardless of his ability as a manager, his results "speak for themselves", as they say. Contrastingly, Pirlo didn't exactly take over prime, AC Milan. Even if he's a capable manager, he may have blown his chance, already.

I have a good feeling with Alonso, but then of course, that means fuck all, and you rightly point out the record of 'designated manager' top players
Still, I think he's going to go places, including the FC Bayern München

And before anyone says Prilo and Arteta, difference is that Alonso is already in his second season of actual managing, if in the third division, so there's at least some work he has done to judge while the two of them didn't have a single second in the job..

You can add Gerrard to that list. Dude always sounded like a dolt every time I heard him speak.

will be following him closely. It would have been great if Gerrard also comes in BL. I know too much of a distant dream and not going to happen but still it would be fun to have both of them in BL.

There are examples in both camps. Ancelotti is a GOAT coach and was a smart player, same as Pep.
Definitely agree that it's not a guarantee that a great player becomes a great manager.
I do have the same good feeling about Alonso as Hans. Looks made to be a manager. The other player I have the highest hopes as a former player-turned manager is De Rossi. He has now joined Mancini as an assistant to the national team.

yea exactly^ it's clearly reductionist to deduce a conclusion that "smart players tend to make bad coaches" and vice versa

Re: The Xabi Alonso will one day be the best manager in the world thread
I don’t really think there’s a correlation between being a successful player and being or not being a successful manager
I think what tends to happen is the bigger the player, the higher profile job they get faster and it’s the lack of experience as a manager that causes them to fail fast and disappear
Pirlo is a great example. He would have never been hired to manage Juventus at this stage of his managerial career if he wasn’t Pirlo
We can say the same for Gattuso, Pippo etc. They are victims of their success as players, as managers and I think it’s harder to recover when you fail starting out a big club
Also, there are way too many hipsters trying to innovate but they can’t implement simple tactics but this is the curse of the modern game

Re: The Xabi Alonso will one day be the best manager in the world thread
It does not come down to how one is smart or less intelligent. First of all a lot of the Pirlo's and Seedorf's get jobs simply because of their image. Both of whom exude class and are very well spoken.
The others, like Pippo (who is improving by the year) give a very convincing on-paper plan that a lot of the club directories will want to hear.
In the end yes, midfielders are bound to succeed more than others given the scope and focus of their career is more tactically demanding than other positions, for the midfield is always in the heat of the battle.
But more so, the ones that succeed are the ones who are best at articulating their footballing mind, from paper onto the field. From their management of player minds, how well they instils it into them, to their staff to their very circumstances.
Boring answer but too many variables on board here.

Re: The Xabi Alonso will one day be the best manager in the world thread
That being said Ive had a great feeling about Xabi for a while now.
Pirlo was always too laid-back to manage a club like Juventus so never understood that.
Xabi, like Arteta was always known as a tremendous leader and had a brilliant understanding of the game when speaking of it.
But like Xavi, who speaks the best of Football and even watches the Syrian B league, it will depend on how well he translates it, from his head.

They are, but in terms of German football scoops they're often correct
