Read again.
You do realise he had a footballing career and nurturing of that before Liverpool?
Being forced into a role does not make you into that role naturally and it is obvious he is not a natural striker in anyway nor was he before coming to Anfield.

Mustafi wouldn't even be good enough for my local team Southend, and they haven't won a game since December. How does this man have any caps for Germany?

Matip MOTM today imo, since Gomez injury in december, Matip has settled in really well, underrated season by him so far imo, he does his job quietly and goes under the radar with people praising VVD so much

Hopefully the Arsenal loss means United will be fired up for the derby against City, but I still can't see them getting points after today's performance

Don't know what have you been watching, but he's been great this season, he is also great at carrying the ball into midfield. Since Gomez was injured in december, we haven't lost a single game with Matip playing

Jogi Löw. He's just sent Hummels and Boateng into retirement but you can bet Mustafi will continue to get games.
Löw handplucked him from Sampdoria straight into the World Cup squad, almost singlehandedly ruining a World Cup quarter vs Algeria
Noone in Germany knew of Mustafi but we assumed he had to be good as he had made it in the great tactical defenders league Serie A, and then was bought by a good La Liga club.
I assumed that too. I thought his disasterclass vs Algeria was down to inexperience/chance.
I should have known better than to blindly rate a player that never had proven himself in Bundesliga in front of my eyes.

It's something I never understood. Mustafi was not a star for Sampdoria. The big Serie A clubs were not after him, Valencia got him for relatively cheap, I don't know where the hype in Germany/England came from.

He started his career in Everton's youth so maybe that play a role in England

Re: 2018/2019 Premier League Discussion Part III
Just thinking about how he ended up at Arsenal makes me mad.
The story goes that our first choice centre back target in 2016 was Manolas, but for whatever reason (price too high, he didn't want to move, etc.) we couldn't get him.
So we moved to our second target... which was Mustafi, for £35m. Someone at Arsenal thought Mustafi was a good player, and Wenger agreed, or was desperate enough, to spend £35m on the guy. Valencia must have been laughing, especially when they got a better defender (Gabriel) off us for not even half of that.
Those decisions have been incredibly damaging and it baffles me how we didn't search for a better option, or were so convinced in Mustafi's quality we thought we got a good deal.

He was linked with all the big clubs, Juve/Milan included.
In the end, we got Romagnoli and Juve got Benatia
