Today I learned Buffon was a fascist in his early years
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gianluigi_Buffon
Skip to ’Controversy’. Caught using fascist symbols multiple times. Curious to hear rincon explain the logic behind this. Personally a fascist outlook is unacceptable to me. Buffon has lost all my respect tbh

Re: Today I learned Buffon was a fascist in his early years
TBH he might even be telling the truth about that, he was 20 or 21 at the time, and a pro football player, which isn't someone who typically listens in history class.
He could also be (or have been) a fascist, but that article listed only two incidents, both of which he's provided (stupid) explanations for, and even to this day, Buffon does talk a lot about balls. Maybe he's just ignorant?

He has a reputation as a bit of a dumb guy so this wouldn't be too surprising

It's like a time machine. Throws me back to when I was kid and started following football more. Except that what was relevant then isn't relevant now. Judging idiot kids (And an athlete kid at that ) for mistakes made about political slogans 20 years ago while looking the other way for everything in between is as immature as Buffon was.

We all made mistakes as kids, especially ones with low education.

On the other hand Buffon even bought his high-school diploma, so I suppose he's justified

There is a 0% chance somebody who grew up in Western Europe in the 80's, in footballing circles, did not know what 88 stood for.
He's a racist and a liar, but thats ok in the end. He's a man of his time.

Yep I believe so too. These "mistakes" don't cut it for me. And those who are being apologetic by saying he was just "young"... WTF. Making mistakes are OK, being fascist in your past is not. Next up is "it's okay to rape someone when you are being young and dumb"

Re: Today I learned Buffon was a fascist in his early years
Thats a childish argument. Being an idiot is not the same as committing a crime.
There is a player in your club that said he hoped for bombs to fall on the camp nou to kill the Catalan and basque 'dogs'. Luckily for everyone Ceballos is not a terrorist but just an ass. If he drops the bs, changes and matures then his adult life shouldn't be defined by a *bleep* up in his youth.

Re: Today I learned Buffon was a fascist in his early years
Gonna be honest, had no idea about this Buffon/fascist link at all so this is genuine news to me and I'm not sure how to look at this really. Was he just a young, impressionable young man who didn't quite understand what he wrote? Or are those feelings genuine and has manifested into a more refined version where he can operate in society pretty normal while maintaining those thoughts?
That being said, I do look at him differently. Still a legend of the game though.

It IS a crime to make fascist comments. Atleast in Sweden it is considered illegal to do hate crimes. Not many get charged for it however.

20 or 21 isn't exactly the age of a kid, to be fair I've always had tons of respect for Buffon as an athlete. As a professional, I lost some respect for him when he, like many other Juventus supporters, claimed that there was a conspiracy involved in that decisive penalty situation. I figured a seemingly classy and composed guy like him would come to his senses once things had calmed down, but he still seems to stand by the irrational opinion that the referee was the one who sabotaged him and his team.

I don't think outside of those couple incidents at Parma that there's been anything of the sort during his time at Juventus. I won't defend it because it's not something you can defend. We can chalk it off as the ignorance of youth, as we are discussing this 20 years beyond and fully conscious of the man he is today- widely considered by most people (not named @robes), as one of the gentleman of the game. However, this is not to be confused with a squeaky clean image. He has said controversial things in the past, the gol di Muntari always stands out.
The criticism of Michael Oliver is something I understand and sympathize with, beyond a matter of right or wrong, it's how he felt in the moment. I see he's rustled the jimmies of most of the football world, which at 40 years old, is something only Buffon would be able to do. So, now were seeing people dig into his past but like my brother and friend @rincon has suggested, this isn't news. I'm not sure if its a sort of vindication for some Real Madrid fans who feel deeply touched by his words after the match that now they have to go out of their way to say he's a bad man, which is fine, Buffon will be the first to tell you that he's far from perfect and he's always been outspoken.
We could go on a longer list of the good things Buffon has done but I don't think that requires any discussion. I don't think it would matter, nor do I care to discuss such things.
All I see is rincon, yourself and a bunch of TIN CAN GL posters

Speak of yourself tbh, there's plenty of people who are wildly immature in their early 20s.

Re: Today I learned Buffon was a fascist in his early years
But there is not just fascist sentences to rate negatively Buffon as man though
The list is so long , I don' t want even making a list of it.
His hypocrisy is off limits. He was delirous against Oliver when he always said that " The referees are the alibi of losers " etc etc
He is a little man though. We talk about a man who betrayed Alena Seredova for Ilaria D' Amico and Alena found out on newspapers
"There are plenty of people who are widly immature in the early 40s "

Re: Today I learned Buffon was a fascist in his early years
It is interesting how the articles attempt to play the incidents off as "immaturity" or "naivety/ unaware." To me those are pretty blatant acts, and it would be naive to believe both incidents were unintentional, he wasn't 7 years old and unable to understand what those things meant- he was 20.
That being said, there has obviously been a change. Everything in my awareness of Buffon has seen him as the upmost professional (maybe apart from bullying the ref and his idiotic comments after the RM match).
To my knowledge this behavior hasn't recurred, so are we going to dig up 20 y/o dirt on every player?

I'm not saying he's a bad man, at all, and I don't care much for his past. All I'm saying is that I expected a more rational response from him, in the aftermath of our last match. What he said and did in the heat of the moment is one thing, but he's still clutching for straws in an attempt to justify why Juve lost. That's not the type of guy I originally thought he was. Then again, even Raul exhibited uncharacteristic moments of aggression towards the tail-end of his career. Ironically, one of those moments occurred against Juve when one too many tackles almost made him lose his shit

I didn’t mean you or even here brother but there’s a reason these kinds of articles and incidents were dragged up following the aftermath of his rant. At the end of the day, Real rightfully went through. I am looking forward to Buffon’s weekly podcast titled: Heartful, starts next Tuesday and features special guests Tom and mole. That’s justice.
