Good chance to make up some ground on City.

With a win, we'll be 3rd on 16 points, ahead of Liverpool on GD, 1 behind Spuds and 2 behind City.

I actually got so bored of our performance that I quit watching around 60 min mark and went for a jog and dinner. rofl

It's only a reverse jinx if you have a hidden motive. I honestly believed it would be a shitshow and the first 60 minutes were exactly that.

Rival Watch - Page 28 Empty Re: Rival Watch

Post by Chumlum Thu Oct 20, 2016 2:24 am

I wrote this a few weeks back, when there was a lot of pessimism after a less than ideal start. But honestly things are looking not so bad right now, are they?

Chumlum wrote:Not sure if this comment should go in this thread or the lobby thread. But I wanted to note a couple things. I think we can all agree that this has not been the smoothest, most high-flying season start for Arsenal. There are a lot of things lacking the way the team's playing. So let me say I'm not trying to paper over cracks. But we could maybe use the state of the league right now to temper our gloomer pessimism at times.

A few weeks ago everyone was gnashing their teeth at the first three matches of the season--dropping points to Liverpool and Leicester, etc. But five rounds into the season, let's look at the table. We're in 4th now (lol), above Man Utd, above Leicester, above Liverpool, above Chelsea. We've ground out some wins and some points that didn't look too pretty or deserved. If we're judging Arsenal against the other half-dozen really strong teams in the league, then frankly most of those rivals for trophies & CL spots are already behind a SUB-PAR Arsenal beginning. How do we like dem apples?

I've few complaints about our current form, though I do think the next decent opposition we come against (looking like Spurs at home) will turn us over if we ignore the frailties in our performances for too long. The goals we're scoring and winning run is fantastic, but there are signs from Burnley, Swansea and even Ludogorets games that the focus is flagging.

I feel like we really need a win against a good team to really cement the fact we're on an upward trajectory.

I think the results are too shiny and the performances are not so much.

We are frail defensively and our midfield is still a mess imho. The fact that we are winning games on a streak is taking attention away from it, but I don't see AW sorting out whats beneath the surface.

I agree there's room for improvement, but the point is that right now Arsenal are in 2nd place, behind Man City by just one goal.

No rival clubs are doing perfectly either--room for improvement for all of them, even City. Liverpool & Spurs are probably playing around the top of their games, but, they're below us anyway right now too.

Not saying things can't change fast--only that the gloom & doom after an imperfect start were hasty, because 18 clubs below Arsenal in the league wouldn't mind switching places. Plus we're looking good in the CL group so far. A lot of players are in very good form right now. It may come crashing down but the signs indicate that the start to the season, while slow and stumbling, was not necessarily very harmful.

We often have one or two purple patches per season and the trend seems to be that if we have one before January, we tend to hit a slump after New Year. Vice versa if we start off poorly. We start picking up steam later on.

Part of it has to do with scheduling. As RG mentioned, I believe, we've had a good run of home games that stretches on a little bit more. Obviously we've been in good form as well, favorable fixtures aren't enough to win 9 of our last 10.

What we'll have to wait and see if we'll have the grit to stay relatively consistent when we face other title contenders and if we can keep our best fit. We're riding the fine form of Alexis, Ozil and Theo.

Real test for Chelsea.

Liverpool should be winning theirs, but we know they can sometimes lose points to the lower opposition. But yea, as you said, we should be just focusing on winning our matches. Way too early to be looking at others around us and casting some dark spells on them. We should be getting the job done ourselves, end of.

We should always be focussing on getting the maximum from our own matches. The rest is not in our control, for that matter.

Is that a suggestion to close the Rival Watch thread? Don't you guys have one in the BVB section? I guess it'd just be called the Bayern Admiration Thread hmm

City away is the only really tough game in our run. Everton have physicality but not much else, and I would expect a full 12 points from the other four.

Looking at those fixtures the only times I see anyone dropping points is against each other. Big game results could well be more important than ever this season.

Sergio Aguero banned for four games for David Luiz foul
Fernandinho has been hit by a three-game suspension.

The Argentina striker will miss City's matches with Leicester, Watford, Arsenal and Hull this month. Fernandinho will be available for the Hull game on Boxing Day.
