Re: Abidal retires from intl football
Only after realizing that he wouldn't get called up anyway?

Re: Abidal retires from intl football
Well, it's nothing to be laughed at imo. He was very important in the fall when france needed leadership through the qualifiers. It's just the end of the line for him, he was waiting to see if Deschamps would still rely on him but he is done now. It's not insulting at all

Should get called instead of Digne. I mean Digne is a great talent and all but Abidal has much more experience and would be more useful for the World Cup as he can cover both CB and LB spot and Digne has been Maxwell's back up all season long.

Re: Abidal retires from intl football
You are not keeping up with french football mate, Abidal is done. he is hardly even getting games at monaco, and ranieri got in trouble for benching him on the down low.
He simply cant play at a high level anymore, everyone in france knows it, no one is calling outrage.

Re: Abidal retires from intl football
Yeah I know that Abdennour and Carvalho are getting more chance at Monaco than him nowadays but Digne probably won't even play at the WC so why shouldn't Abidal get called up? He's well experienceed and could act as a liaison between the players and coaches moreso than a player.
Pretty much what Sports said about Landreau's call up instead of Ruffier.

Re: Abidal retires from intl football
Abidal doesn't have enough game to play for France NT now... that's the bottom line. If he was even marginally good enough, he would have been called up. He's done. He just couldn't play at all and it would have been a sad thing if he played because he would have embarassed himself likely.
Other issue is that when Henry was part of the group despite being benched in 2010, it backfired badly. Guys of this status rarely do well when they're on the bench regardless of whether they're good peeps.
Great player and person. He should have been the captain of France starting in 2009 but Domenech the moron didn't see that.
