Re: why is pool selling Meireless?
i dont think engines have a defined position, by engines i mean a unflashy player who makes it possible for others to show off.Sepi wrote:theaguia wrote:BeautifulGame wrote:theaguia wrote:well it is sort of like the makalele situation, they would be selling the engine
As good as he is that's a huge exaggeration.
i didnt compare him to makalele, obviously that is stupid, i said makalele situation they are selling the engine for more flashy players
Don't engines usually play deep though ? I think Portugal should try Raul in a more offensive position...to me, he looked his best highest forward in midfield of 4-3-3 beccause of his great technique and shooting ability.
Pretty much the position Lampard plays for Chelsea. the closest thing I could think of.
for portugal he sits a bit deep with moutinho and they share defenisve responsibilities. I dont think he would be as good higher up as his main asset offensively is his perfectly timed runs from deep. his shooting ability is also more useful from far. for portugal he has had to reduce a bit of his attacking instincts as moutinho is playing alongside him and both are naturally attacking players so they need to hold back a little. so he is not been able to consistently do those deep runs, furthermore we have martins who is playing higher.
i think you are right when you say he is close to lampard in regards to those deep runs both make.

Firstly i am not denying that he was one of our best players last season even won Fan's PL player of the year. But saying he is the engine of our side is completely over exaggeration.
If anyone is what you call "engine of the side" that is Lucas. And our best midfielder by some distance is a fully fit Gerrard. Before anyone saying he is past his best a half fit Gerrard ripped apart United last season in midfield. And we will build our side in all likelihood build our team around Carroll and Suarez. And Meireles will be one of our important players in the team but not engine.
So yes if we sell him it will be very hard to replace him and need to spend quality money to adequately replace him but he isn't a irreplaceable player by any stretch of imagination. For say when we play 4-4-2 on occasions he will be benched and rotated.
Either way its pointless discussing the merits/demerits of selling him as i dont think we are interested in selling and he also wants to stay.

@bg: I think he means he has great work rate.
And, yeah, he isn't leaving.

Sell Meireles and forget about CL, Gerrard hasn't played to his superstar billing for awhile now and cannot be relied upon to carry the team as he once did. I'd sell Gerrad over Meireles anyday of the week

F*cking hell.
Meireles is the new Zidane on GoalLegacy
People realize he played AM/Wingers 90% of last season......and yea, an over-rated injury prone, past it Gerrard was enough to outplay Chelsea and Mancs, and of course in 45 minutes destroy Serie A's third best team.

Re: why is pool selling Meireless?
I just think he's underrated, not the new Zidane, he done well when called upon, and when other players cracked under the pressure he stood up, Meireles is a decent player, an engine and can score
Can't believe Pool fans are throwing him under the bus

Re: why is pool selling Meireless?
ive always rated meireles, well definitely since his porto days i have always thought he deserved a bigger club.
i just dont think he should be considered a "squad" player in any situation.
especially before he is benched by downing lol is that who he is going to be replaced by?

I understand why you would say so, but ask yourself this question?ynwa wrote:teamanarchy wrote:Screw Meireles, Sell injury-prone, way-past-his-2009-form Gerrard
That has to be the stupidest post I've ever seen on these forums, and trust me, I've seen some really stupid posts.
What has Gerrard done this last season?
In comparison to Meireles?
I couldn't agree more that Gerrard is a fantastic player. Truly.
But if you want honesty, he is past his best. And if he's injured for huge chunks of the season, what use is he?
Re: why is pool selling Meireless?
Now that's an achievement.Sepi wrote:BigBoban wrote:Sell Meireles and forget about CL, Gerrard hasn't played to his superstar billing for awhile now and cannot be relied upon to carry the team as he once did. I'd sell Gerrad over Meireles anyday of the week

Adebayor destroyed England's 5th best team!
He's indespensible now!
Re: why is pool selling Meireless?
If you rate Gerrard over Meireles... and I'm not talking about the Gerrard of 08/09, I'm talking about Gerrard of 10/11... then you should give up.ynwa wrote:If people rate Meireles over Gerrard, I give up with football.
Obviously Gerrard holds sentimental value for liverpool supporters across the globe.
Raul held the same sentimental value for me for years. I was in straight up denial about his decline, I admit it.
BUT, the truth is neither player holds/held the kind of standard of play, week-in, week-out that is needed for his club which has high aspirations in terms of title hopes/top 4 finish.
Assess Gerrard's ability right now with some objective thought and rationality
Re: why is pool selling Meireless?
Sepi wrote:now, we are buying a specialist LW (probably Downing) who can cross a ball for AC and beat a man, so that leaves Raul outta the position. AM is occupied by Suarez, and Lucas and Gerrard are nailed on for central midfield. That's why I think he'd be more of a squad player, and considering we aren't in Europe (means 50 games in a season MAX)..then it makes the whole thing a bit more interesting

Re: why is pool selling Meireless?
I'm still not sure if the Raul exit has any 'beef' in it though rumors have been dime-a-dozen. We will need squad depth so some additions were imperative. Also, the impending 6+5 rules dictates we need certain number of 'home-grown' players. As such the the arrival of Henderson & Adam.
IMO, our present mid-field is like,
DM: Lucas & Spearing
CM: Gerrard & Henderson
AM: Raul & Adam
However, Gerrard, Henderson, Raul & Adam can play at different positions and that will add to squad depth.
It's the Aqualini issue that has thrown a spanner into all the good works. It's not just the additional €3-4 million in wages. Both Raul & Aqualini are in their prime and will want regular starting spots.
I think, some Italian club will eventually (during this window) sign Aqualini and Raul will stay.

Gerrard was our best player under Roy (alongside Lucas)...and he has only played 5 games under Kenny (2 of which against Mancs and Chelsea in both he was brilliant).
Raul was very average/poor under Roy, and only started being great after change of management.
I am sure if you were a Man U fan, you'd be in the group of "Sack Fergie, Sell Giggs" of early 2000s, photos still there. Exactly same situation for RG

So you prefer a central midfielder with no ability to beat a man or deliver a cross over a out and out winger in a LW position ?
It's like saying, let's play Sahin in place of Di Maria....

And, as you put it. He only played 5 games under kenny. 5 is awfully low.
I'm all for keeping club heros/icons. And respect for the loyalty... but a player that plays 5 games in 7 months is as usefull as a chocolate teapot.
Ask Kaka
Re: why is pool selling Meireless?
Actually, Sahin would play Di Maria's position perfectly IMHOSepi wrote:deezydeez wrote:Sepi wrote:now, we are buying a specialist LW (probably Downing) who can cross a ball for AC and beat a man, so that leaves Raul outta the position.
