Re: Mignolet is very underrated
Mignolet just doesn't work well for Liverpool. We need a keeper that can take command of his area and help organize the defence. Mignolet is, quite simply, a shot stopper. He doesn't read the game well, and he doesn't handle the ball all that well. His reflexes are good, but he'd be much better suited to a mid to small side that plays very defensively. He isn't good with space behind the D because he doesn't know how to command his area and it's obvious his communication is very lacking.
I don't hate him persay, but he doesn't belong at Liverpool with the way we are trying to play.

Hapless_Hans wrote:Maybe.. but it is really straightforward like that?
Lower position = better suited to reach low shots, higher position = ...?
Or isn't it also about from which position he can utilize/deploy his jumping strength from, move his body etc?
Again, I don't know anyting about it, but something about Neville's criticism feels far too casual for me.
I find it hard to believe that Neville (or you for that matter, with all due respect) would find basic technical mistakes in the game of a top goalie that Liverpool gk coaches don't find..
Because its a technical mistake only as an opinion. There is no rule book on how to do anything, merely opinions. Perhaps the Pool goalie coach is of the opinion this way is better or perhaps the keeper himself does it his way in contrast to the coaches belief.
In the end, its all opinion. You can go to different coaches and speak to them about the same thing and get totally different technical answers.

Re: Mignolet is very underrated
That makes sense.
Anyway, might well be there are certain problems with Mignolet's body positioning, but the way Neville talked about it seemed off to me, especially with the example of the Jagielka goal, because.. come on.., and also because it sometimes annoys me how they mix analysis with a cheerful indulgement in this moronic Utd vs Liverpool 'banter'.
By that I mean he seems to draw some silly pleasure out of overcritizing Mignolet.

I hear Marc-André ter Stegen might be looking for a new club
He would be perfect..

Re: Mignolet is very underrated
This man has had one of the biggest psychological turnarounds in recent memory. By gawd he's turned into prime Oliver Kahn.
Ever since Brendan dropped him and told him to punch everything he sees and his fiance talked sense into him he's been unbelievable. It does help that the defense is finally settled in front of him but by god he's saving us points single handedly.

On the topic of opinions...
If Sepi is one end of the opinion spectrum and McAgger is at the other end, which Liverpool fan(s) actually have the middle ground opinion because it's basically two extremes working here.
Mignolet is alright I guess. Good shot stopper though.

Re: Mignolet is very underrated
He's doing what he does best. He's being put in a position where his main job is to make saves and he is very good at that. His kicking and command are still not stellar, but having 3 defenders and one of which is dropping deeper has helped immensely for him. Not to mention the whole team gelling.
He definitely deserves a tip of the hat though...he's been incredible of late.

As a goalkeeper, I assumed that was his primary job anyway? I don't expect my dustbin man to be able to perform eye surgeryEl Cujo wrote:He's being put in a position where his main job is to make saves.

It's defo OTT, I reckon Arte or RedO have the middleground.
On topic he's probably looking much better now because how turd he was earlier this season, just a solid upper mid tier GK.

Finally has a settled defence in front of him (which he can trust thus play naturally / with confidence) and he performs to his best shocker.

Well obviously that's the 'primary' job, but the way that Rodgers plays (or had set up before) the keeper was a lot more involved with the ball, on the defence, and didn't have the same stability in front of him. That's all. Now Mignolet can focus almost solely on shot stopping.

Re: Mignolet is very underrated
Mignolet is no doubt a very good shotstopper (when confident/on form) but in the modern game, especially under a manager like Rodgers who would ideally prefer to control a matches flow and generally dictate tempo through possession, a keeper needs to be comfortable with his feet and be able to regularly distribute accurately. That's clearly an area where Mignolet is weak and I would not be in the least bit surprised if we still made a move to secure competition or a replacement in the coming windows.
