Those that have come and gone
A post in another thread got me thinking about how many players have come and gone in the last 15 years. Seeing as though it is the off season, I thought it would be nice to reminisce about players that we miss. They can be players that have since retired but lets stay away from the obvious choices like Raul, Guti, Zidane, Ronaldo, Roberto Carlos, Figo etc.
So state [two] names and say why you miss those players, I will go first:
1) Ivan Helguera: White blood through this mans veins! IMO better at defensive midfield that central defense, but so much passion and always willing to put his body on the line. I especially loved how he would throw himself in front of shots to try and block them. A true warrior.
2) Santiago Solari: More prominent in his early years Real Madrid but was a good player for the cause. Set R.Carlos on his way down the touchline to supply the ball for Zidane's CL masterpiece strike. I enjoyed the latter stages of his Real Madrid career where he was Mr Super Sub!

Robben. Was so excited to see him come and then so disappointed when he left. Wesley or VDV didn't bother me much at all but I thought Robben was absolute class. The injury problem is however significant. Think he's been good about keeping out of treatment since he's joined Bayern though.

I think we can safely put Beckham in the High Profile category, haha!
Anyways, how about Cambiasso? Still is one of the best passive minded defensive midfielders in the game. Positioning and awareness are/were second to none. He was also pretty good going forward, a trait that most defensive mids do not possess.

Re: Those that have come and gone
Well, I don't have the memories you guys have regarding the players listed so far.
Helguera - started career very well, was deemed the next Hierro and was even with Selecciones for a while. But he faded rapidly. In his last year, he had absolutely no confidence. He was a risk every time he was out there. Didn't recover when he went to Valencia.
Solari - someow I don't remember much about him, only recall him being a reserve.
Beckham - his purchase was not necessary from a futbol perspective, was only done for marketing reason. I don't feel he played well at Madrid until after he had signed with LA and Capello wasn't going to use him. He played really good futbol after that. The only good about this (well 2 actually) he was instrumental in helping us win la liga and his efforts impressed Capello enough to allow him back with English NT.
Robben - This man is frustrating to me. He gives glances of excitment and then he gets hurt. I always found his moves to be too predictable. He's been on the sidelines hurt more than he plays. Pattern has continued at Chelsea, Madrid and Bayern.
Cambiasso - I have a better impression of him at Inter than at Madrid.
Roberto Carlos - I don't want to sound too negative on him as he was one of the greatest to ever play at Madrid. There was a few years were I thought he was the best player in the world. I still remember an end to end full speed run he did with the ball and the ball never touched the ground. However by the end of his career at Madrid, he almost forgot that his position was defense. He rarely was back when the other team attacked.

I understand your sentiments but I suppose we all have our opinions. The point of the topic was to remember a few less memorable players that made still made an impression on you and that you miss. With Helguera, things got a bit bad at the end, but then again who finishes well at a club like Real Madrid anyway? For me I feel Helguera's reputation suffered having been paired with Paco Pavon, who was the real weak link (along with Raul Bravo) in defense at the time. Anyways, back on topic.
What other less famous players do you guys miss?
Re: Those that have come and gone
McManaman
Really loved that guy in midfield
Suker + Mijatovic strike combo
Was again pretty awesome
Karembeu
I feel highly underrated, but an excellent player to watch

he was really unlucky during his times at Real Madrid. we've had Ronaldo and Raul and they were both better than him. there was no room for him to shine.

Great examples Crimson. To this extent then, I would like to add none other than Clarence Seedorf. What a gem of a midfielder and still one of my favourite player

Re: Those that have come and gone
Yeah unfortunately it was a case of right place at the wrong time for poor Sammy Eto'o. He could have been special at Real Madrid. Another player whose future should have been managed better. Sometimes I feel that half the reason he did so well for Barcelona comes from his deep hatred for Real Madrid and the drive to prove us wrong. Well we could have said that, had he not done as well at Inter, but he didn't. A true professional, great player Eto'o!
Re: Those that have come and gone
I miss Robben the most......Some honorable mentions to RC3, Beckham, Sneijder, Cambiasso, and Robinho (the original, not the a$$hole he is nowadays)

lol, I didn't notice I was developing a pattern there Yuri.. I wouldn't call it hording, rather being sentimental. I just like looking back on happy memories from when I supported Real Madrid as a kid. Have you got anyone to add to the list of players you miss or are you just the Find, F*ck and Forget type?
