That guy is HUGE. Especially for an 18 year old. Seems too good to be true, good intelligence, tactically, physically, how is his speed?

Seems like his a certified future superstar, then.
I still think that he should be loaned for a season, though, unless he can already displace Carvalho and Albiol to become the 3rd CB. Which I very much doubt.

Re: Raphael Varane
He has very long strides obviously. So he can make up a lot of ground very quickly if he has the time. Off the blocks, maybe a bit slow. But he has very good tactical awareness... which is almost a must if you're 1,91m and obviously can't fire it up as quickly as the short guys.
A lot of the great tall defenders seem like they're out of the play, and then they take that one big stride and take the ball away. Also, once they get their body into you, it's all over.
It will be interesting to see how he does in practice against our uber-fast and good dribbling players. That's really going to be the test for him.

Re: Raphael Varane
What matters imo is the acceleration in the first meters

A lot of times with Varane, it may look like the offensive player has a step on him. Then he makes that one big stride at the right time and gets the job done. You just can't take off as quickly as the shorter guys... you have a lot farther to go to take a step.
Other than Bolt, who is a freak, you don't see a lot of tall sprinters do well out of the blocks. They just need to do well enough to be able to recover in time.

Re: Raphael Varane
Hopefully this means that Coentrao won't come. We should now let Ramos stay RB, although he is better as CB. But, I prefer Ramos as RB over Coentrao as RB and we would also save a lot of cash.
