Swiss Goalkeeper Appreciation Thread
I just have to do it...
Name: Yann Sommer
Club: FC Basel
Birthdate: 17.12.1988
Age: 23
Height: 183
Weight (kg): 80
Nationality: Swiss
He had a really great game against Bayern München today. I hope he'll give Diego Benaglio a run for his money for the Swiss NT Nr.1 position soon.
Edit:
I just heard on TV that he *will* get his call up to the Swiss NT soon. *boogie*
And he looks stunning off the pitch, too:

Pfff. I decided to adopt him even though he's no German GK. I think I'll put him on the shelf next to Gigi

Re: Swiss Goalkeeper Appreciation Thread
I really hope Switzerland will qualify for the WC2014 - but in their group and with those promising youngsters they can well do it IMO. I'd love to see Sommer in Rio. ^^
Oh, and Germany will play a friendly against Switzerland in Basel at May 26th. Who knows, maybe he'll get a chance in his home stadium then. ^^

Re: Swiss Goalkeeper Appreciation Thread
Didn't Switzerland win the u-21 euro or world cup or something like that?
They have a great generation coming up, plus the General is their coach. They have a good chance.

Switzerland were runners-up with Yann Sommer in goal. Spain won the U21 Euro 2011.

Re: Swiss Goalkeeper Appreciation Thread
Ah my mistake I meant the U-17 team.
They won the world cup in 2009 and reached the semi's of the Euro's in the same year.
Am I wrong or would that be Sommer's generation?
EDIT: Just checked Benjamin Siegrist won the golden glove that year. Also Xhaka played.
Anyway Switzerland have good youth atm.

Re: Swiss Goalkeeper Appreciation Thread
Yeah, the U17 WC 2009 was won by Switzerland. Benjamin Siegrist was the GK of that team, though. Yann Sommer seems to have played only the U21 Euro (that as Nr.1 and captain of the team, though) where Switzerland ended up very respectably, too. Until the final, Sommer kept clean sheets in all matches, only in the final Spain scored two goals and thus won 2:0.
I think they really should qualify for the 2014 World Cup with their bunch of highly talented youngsters. (Their WC2014 qualification group contains Switzerland, Slovenia, Norway, Albania, Iceland and Cyprus).

That's because GKs are a breed apart and usually more interesting than field players. Okay, I guess I'll make an exception for Raúl. ^^

Re: Swiss Goalkeeper Appreciation Thread
Yesterday, FC Basel managed the 3rd win at home in a row in 2012. Of course this was quite a bit due to Yann Sommer's great goalkeeping again:
(I admit, I just wanted a reason to post more Yann Sommer pics - I added some to the first post, too )

Re: Swiss Goalkeeper Appreciation Thread
Today Yann Sommer kept another clean sheet in today's match Grasshoppers Zurich - FC Basel (0:2), making it 10 clean sheets so far in this season of the Axpo Super League. Not bad at all ^^

Re: Swiss Goalkeeper Appreciation Thread
Grin, I just stumbled over this here in the Swiss paper "Blick.ch":
The readers there voted Yann Sommer the most handsome football player in Switzerland. I definitely approve!
Wer ist der schönste Kicker im Land?
1. Yann Sommer (Basel), 2410 votes
2. Denis Hediger (Thun), 1785 votes
3. Scott Sutter (FCZ), 1432 votes

Re: Swiss Goalkeeper Appreciation Thread
LOL. I know the U21 EC final didn't go according to plan But at least up to then, Yann Sommer kept his goal clean and didn't allow for any goal against during the competiton until the final.
