Messi the captain
Martin Palermo said
“When Messi wore the captain’s armband for the first time during the World Cup against Greece, he had to make the speech to the team.
He stood up in the locker room: “So, this is an important match….eeeeh…bah, I’m nervous!” and he left, and we applauded him.

Re: Messi the captain
One huge attribute Maradona had that Messi does not: leadership.
Even when Messi speaks in a normal tone, he just sort of slurs his words around. Does not inspire confidence, at all. I can't imagine a speech. A Fabregas type of leader, given to him due to being the best player and not the best leader.

He's only 24 and there is plenty of time to develop that, now that he's the captain of Argentina.Sushi Master wrote:One huge attribute Maradona had that Messi does not: leadership.

Re: Messi the captain
He won't be half the leader Maradona was. I can tell simply by the way he speaks and his sort of personality. He definitely has the determination, but I see him as too much of an introvert to really convey emotion.jiopsi wrote:He's only 24 and there is plenty of time to develop that, now that he's the captain of Argentina.Sushi Master wrote:One huge attribute Maradona had that Messi does not: leadership.
Being a leader is not something that comes with age... it's something you're born with, IMO. Messi was born a legendary player, but not a legendary leader.

I think that messi is already a good leader on the pitch,he takes the responsibility to himself, specially with Argentina, but he doesnt have that mental leadership which is required to win a WC for example

Says who? Many psychologists have said otherwise.
There can be arguments made for both, born and made.
Anyway, this meaningless quote doesnt mean much. Leadership isnt just what you say, its what you, how you conduct yourself too. Its how you react to situations and if you can help your teammates.
Shouting and hollering at people isnt leadership.

If a GOAT was my captain, I would bow down to the GOAT even if he didn't speak.

Re: Messi the captain
You're right, Franchise, but on a football pitch it's a different matter. In such a physical environment I'm pretty sure it helps, like when you're in the gym and your spotter shouts at you to keep going, or your girl is near climax :lucas:
You also have to take into account that most football players aren't the smartest guys around. Some literally need to be shouted into acting or to be kept in order.
If you were in a calmer environment, you'd be absolutely correct, but in such a primal place such as a football pitch, to me it would help. Can you imagine Kahn not shouting his defense to the ground?

Re: Messi the captain
I get your point, but the leaders have to been born thing is quite obsurd. People and players devolp leadership.
There have been great leaders who have not been the most vocal, and im talking players.
Leadership is about trust, its about how your teammates respond to you and that can what you do verbally or physically.
There are different types of leaders is what im getting at.
I dont know how much of a leader Messi is, we arent there with him on the pitch. But from what I see, I dont see why anyone wouldnt want to trust and follow him and his play surely inspires his teammates.

Re: Messi the captain
Maradonna was a " caid " , if he wasn't that talented he could have been a mafioso or something :mental: . This guy was friend with Fidel Castro at a time when the worl was still divised. Players today don't even take position, they "tweet" about football and that's all. You don't want to mess up with diego. Of course he is an absolute leader but messi can be one " by example" . he works his socks off so that could motivate the others but he won't start shouting at someone if he is playing like shit ... at lesat not now ...

Re: Messi the captain
Yeah, I meant mostly the vocal type of leaders, but there can definitely be the leader by example type, which definitely Messi is. Hell, I think there have been wartime officers with that sort of personality.
It's just that Messi can barely string 2 coherent sentences together. It's hilarious. He literally mumbles his words. Not something to really inspire me to keep going, is all I'm saying.
Maradona is so much of a leader, he's friends with Chávez :lucas:

Re: Messi the captain
Yeah, its the downside of not understand Catalan or Spanish. Dont get to hear the first hand interviews from the players.
Anyway, Maradona was obviously a great leader and a different kind of leader. And to this point, clearly a "better" one, or more accurately a more experienced one with the personality for the vocal style.
I dont think Messi's leadership qualities will ever be about how vocal he is, more, his actions and how inspiring that can be. Overall, I think different personalities respond to different styles and I think alot of litrature on this subject says the same. Some players (like a Pique for example) are probably better suited to the vocal kind, whereas others (cant really think of any example atm) are more suited to other types.
Me personally as a player, the shouting or the talkitive leadership didnt really do me anything. Communcation is CRUCIAL though, helping each other that way. But in terms of being inspired to give that little bit more, it was feeding off other players actions rather then what they are saying which worked for me.
Maradona was both though, I think he inspired with his actions just a much, if not more, then his words.

Re: Messi the captain
Messi's actions on the field are an example to the players on the field and they take inspiration from it. I guess that it one kind of leadership, but he isn't one to motivate players when things are not going well.
If say Barca were losing at half time you would expect the team leader (not the coach) to get everyone pumped up. Messi doesn't have that kind of leader ship or personality to do so. He is a quite guy.

Re: Messi the captain
That's what I was trying to say, thanks for making it clearer. All that shouting and screaming people into line isn't just for the inspiration factor, but all communication. Messi definitely inspires players with his skills, but he has literally 0 communication abilities.

Re: Messi the captain
Well as a forward, I dont think he has to communicate very much. On the pitch, he has the freedom to move pretty much how he likes and people work around him. I am not sure how often he actually needs to communicate.
He is unique in that, because literally every other position requires at level some level of communication.
EP. I dont think anyone other than Puyol does that for us, but that doesnt mean Xavi doent have leadership qualities, he certaintly does. I think that aspect is just one part of leadership, not the entire thing.
I also think, that when Barca are losing, its more tactical than anything else and I imagine its pretty quite in their while Pep is telling them what they arent doing correctly.
I think the big half time speechs is more for lesser teams (or in very unique situations) if im honest.
